Safe Extension Cord Use

Extension Cord

Extension cords are a convenient solution when you need to power a device and the electrical outlet is too far away. However, improper use of extension cords can lead to electrical hazards, including fires and electric shocks. At Thomas Edison Electric, we want homeowners across Pennsylvania to use extension cords safely and effectively. These best practices will ensure your home stays safe while using extension cords.

1. Choose the Right Extension Cord for the Job

Not all extension cords are created equal. Selecting the right cord for your needs is essential to avoid overloading and ensure safe operation. Consider these factors:

  • Indoor vs. Outdoor Use: Extension cords labeled for outdoor use are designed to withstand moisture, temperature changes, and other environmental factors. Never use an indoor extension cord outdoors, as indoor extension cords are not manufactured with the needed durability.

  • Gauge and Length: Thicker cords (lower gauge numbers) can handle more power and are suitable for heavy-duty appliances. Longer cords can lead to voltage drops. Choose the shortest length necessary for the task for the best performance.

  • Amperage Rating: Ensure the cord can handle the electrical load of the devices you plan to connect. Check the amperage or wattage rating on both the cord and the device.

  • Ensure Grounding: Select extension cords that have three-prong plugs.

  • Choose Independent Lab-Approved Product: To ensure your extension is safety tested and approved, consider lab-tested products such as those reviewed by Underwriter Labs (UL).

2. Inspect the Cord Before Use

Before plugging in your extension cord, inspect it for signs of damage. Look for:

  • Frayed Wires: Exposed or frayed wires can cause electrical shocks or fires.

  • Cracked Insulation: Damaged insulation reduces the cord’s ability to protect against electrical hazards.

  • Broken Plugs: A loose or broken plug can compromise the cord’s connection and create a fire risk.

If you notice any damage, do not use the cord. Replace it immediately with a new one that meets your needs.

3. Avoid Overloading the Cord

Extension cords are designed to handle a specific electrical load. Overloading the cord by plugging in multiple high-wattage devices can cause it to overheat and potentially ignite. To prevent overloading:

  • Use only one heavy-duty appliance per extension cord.

  • Calculate the total wattage of all devices connected to the cord to ensure the cord’s capacity isn’t exceeded.

  • For multiple devices, consider using a power strip with overload protection.

  • Do not use cords that are hot to the touch.

4. Position the Cord Safely

How you position your extension cord can impact its effectiveness and safety. Avoid these common mistakes:

  • Don’t Run Cords Under Rugs: Covering cords with rugs or carpets can cause overheating and increase the risk of fire. Never cover an extension cord.

  • Avoid Pinching: Do not pinch cords in doorways, windows, or furniture. This can damage the insulation and cause fraying.

  • Keep Away from Water: Never place cords in areas where they may come into contact with water, such as near sinks, bathtubs, or puddles.

Instead, be sure to run the cord along walls or other areas where it won’t be tripped over or exposed to damage.

5. Unplug When Not in Use

Leaving an extension cord plugged in when it’s not being used can increase the risk of accidental damage or overheating. Make it a habit to unplug the cord from the wall when it’s not actively powering a device.

6. Use GFCI Protection for Outdoor Cords

When using an extension cord outdoors, ensure the outlet it’s plugged into is protected by a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI). A GFCI outlet automatically shuts off power if it detects a ground fault, protecting you from electric shocks in wet or damp conditions.

7. Avoid Connecting Multiple Cords

Connecting multiple extension cords together, known as “daisy-chaining,” can lead to voltage drops and overheating. Never connect multiple extension cords. If you need a longer reach, purchase a single cord of the appropriate length and gauge to handle the task.

Note: Remove the plug from the electrical outlet by hand. Yanking the cord from the outlet can damage the outlet and/or the cord.

8. Store Cords Properly

Proper storage extends the life of your extension cords and prevents damage. After use:

  • Coil the Cord Loosely: Avoid tight loops or knots, which can strain the wires inside.

  • Untangle Knots: If your cord becomes knotted, untangle the cord and inspect for damage.

  • Store in a Dry, Shaded Location: Keep cords away from moisture and direct sunlight to prevent deterioration.

  • Use Cord Organizers: To keep them tangle-free and organized, store cords on hooks or reels.

9. Know When to Upgrade to Permanent Wiring

Extension cords are a temporary solution, not a replacement for permanent wiring. If you find yourself relying heavily on extension cords in your home:

  • Install Additional Outlets: A licensed electrician can add outlets in convenient locations to reduce your dependence on cords.

  • Upgrade Your Electrical System: For heavy electrical needs, consider upgrading your wiring to handle additional appliances safely.

At Thomas Edison Electric, we can help assess your home’s electrical system and provide long-term solutions that eliminate the need for constant extension cord use. If you’re using extension cords daily, give us a call instead.
