Rewiring a City Built in 1938

Bordentown's homes date to a median year of 1938, among the oldest we work on in Burlington County. Knob-and-tube remnants, fuse boxes, 60-amp services and ungrounded outlets are still part of daily life behind those walls.

A lot of what we do here follows a renovation. Open a wall for a new kitchen and old wiring often comes with it, so we fold an electrical safety inspection into the same visit.

Common Electrical Projects in Bordentown Homes

Knob-and-tube wiring, still present behind plaster in older sections, was never built for central air or a run of kitchen appliances. We trace it, replace what's live and leave the rest properly capped.

Fuse boxes and 60-amp services show up often too. Circuit breaker repair and upgrades swaps that for a 200-amp panel with room for an EV charger if that's the plan, and we ground two-prong outlets along the way.

Permits, Inspections and Your Utility in Bordentown

Bordentown's construction office issues electrical permits under the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code. We file under our own license, schedule the inspection and are on site when the sub-code official arrives, so the paperwork is ready when you need it.

PSE&G is the utility here. A panel upgrade needs a disconnect and reconnect at the meter, which we set directly with PSE&G. Downed lines are their repair. From the meter into the house, any hour, that's on us.

Electrical service

I was really impressed with Don and Engeli and the work they performed for me. We had a discussion on the best way to run the new line for the septic pump and I really appreciated the extra effort they made to keep the esthetic of my home's exterior. They were pleasant and professional and all my fans and lights work great! They were patient and waited until I approved everything. A great team!

Bordentown Electrical FAQs

What should I check before renovating an older Bordentown home?

Start with the panel and the wiring behind the walls you're about to open. Knob-and-tube remnants and fuse boxes are common in Bordentown's 1938-era housing stock. An electrical safety inspection gives you a written list before the contractor starts, not after.

Do you serve the towns around Bordentown too?

Yes. The same local crews also reach Crosswicks, Roebling, Columbus and Florence. Nobody gets a different standard just because their address isn't Bordentown itself.

Is my Bordentown neighborhood served by PSE&G?

Most likely. PSE&G handles the wires up to your meter here. If a storm takes those lines down, that repair is PSE&G's. If just your house is dark, that's likely our side of the meter, and we answer any hour.

Can a 1938 Bordentown house handle central air and an EV charger?

Often, once the panel is upgraded. A 60 or 100-amp fuse box from that era wasn't built for either. We size a new 200-amp panel for both, priced in one written quote before we start.
