The Thomas Edison difference

Your Electricians in Carbon County

Thomas Edison Electric's Carbon County electricians work for a multigenerational, family-owned company, licensed in Pennsylvania under PA075449. They are direct employees who live and work around the county, and each one heads out from home in a fully stocked TEE van. More than 37,000 jobs have taken us through the door since 2021.

We work in Jim Thorpe, Lehighton, Palmerton, Lansford, Nesquehoning, Summit Hill, Weatherly, Bowmanstown and up around Lake Harmony and Albrightsville. Many of the houses date to the early seventies, and the electrical needs are real. Panels are out of room, aluminum wiring was never addressed, and outlets have no ground. We fix those and we put in the new things too, from EV chargers to standby generators.

Three electric providers serve Carbon County. We file service upgrade paperwork with the right one so your project doesn't wait.

Early seventies wiring, handled

Homes of the county's 1972 median vintage often have aluminum branch circuits and two-prong outlets. We correct them properly.

Local electricians, stocked vans

Our Carbon County electricians dispatch from home in fully stocked TEE vans, and we cover the five counties around Carbon with the same crews.

Electrical Service Across Carbon County

Most of Carbon County gets its power from PPL Electric Utilities, but two boroughs don't. Lehighton and Weatherly each run their own municipal electric systems. If you live in either one, you arrange your service upgrade, meter change or disconnect with the borough rather than PPL. The requirements are not the same. We ask for your address and file with the right one.

Where the line ends and our work begins is the same in every town. The utility owns the poles, the service drop and the meter. We own everything from the meter into the house. That's the main breaker, the panel, the branch circuits and every outlet, switch and fixture on them. A neighborhood outage is theirs to restore. A dead circuit, a breaker that won't hold or a panel that hums is ours, at any hour.

Carbon County borders Lehigh, Northampton, Monroe, Luzerne and Schuylkill Counties, and we serve all five with the same local electricians. We group scheduled projects whenever you'd like. A panel upgrade, a dedicated circuit for the garage and a safety inspection make more sense in one visit. Three separate visits waste your time.

Common Electrical Projects in Carbon County Homes

A 1972 median build year puts Carbon County right in the aluminum wiring years. The metal moves more with heat than copper, so terminations loosen over the decades. A warm outlet cover, a crackling switch or lights that dim when the fridge kicks on are common warning signs. That's the first thing we check.

The panel is usually next. 100 amp service was standard in 1972 and it's tight for a modern house. Adding a mini split, an EV charger or a hot tub means a service upgrade to 200 amps. We coordinate that with PPL or with Lehighton or Weatherly's borough electric.

Beyond that, the usual list for this era:

Permits, Inspections and Your Utility in Carbon County

Electrical permits in Carbon County are a municipal matter under Pennsylvania's Uniform Construction Code. Most townships and boroughs contract with a third-party inspection agency rather than keep their own building department. That means the application, the fee and the inspector vary from Jim Thorpe to Palmerton to Nesquehoning. We know that going in. We file the permit under our license and schedule the inspections around your calendar. After that, we stand next to the inspector for the review.

Then the utility. For most of the county that's PPL Electric Utilities. A service upgrade or meter relocation goes through their process. In Lehighton and Weatherly, the borough's own electric department handles it. It has its own forms and its own crews for the disconnect. We coordinate whichever applies. Their equipment stops at the meter. Ours starts there, and we take responsibility for all of it.

Electrical service

I was really impressed with Don and Engeli and the work they performed for me. We had a discussion on the best way to run the new line for the septic pump and I really appreciated the extra effort they made to keep the esthetic of my home's exterior. They were pleasant and professional and all my fans and lights work great! They were patient and waited until I approved everything. A great team!

Carbon County Electrical FAQs

I live in Lehighton. Is my electric company PPL?

Not necessarily. Lehighton runs its own borough electric system, and so does Weatherly. PPL Electric Utilities serves most of the rest of Carbon County. Your bill will say. The distinction matters for service upgrades and meter work, since the borough has its own procedure. We handle that coordination for you.

What's the most common repair you do in Carbon County homes?

Loose aluminum wiring connections come up constantly. The county's median home dates to 1972, and aluminum branch circuits were standard then. We fix it with rated connectors at every outlet, switch and splice. Where the damage has gone too far, we rewire instead. An electrical safety inspection tells you which you need.

Can I add an EV charger to a 100 amp panel?

Sometimes, and we'll tell you honestly after we look. A Level 2 charger needs its own circuit and real capacity behind it. If the panel is already full or the load calculation is tight, a 200 amp upgrade is the right move. We coordinate that with PPL or your borough. The quote for both comes in writing.

Do you take emergency calls in Carbon County at night?

Yes, every night of the year, holidays included. Our electricians dispatch from their own homes, so a call from Jim Thorpe or Palmerton goes to a licensed TEE employee with a stocked van. We serve the five counties that border Carbon as well: Lehigh, Northampton, Monroe, Luzerne and Schuylkill. If we arrive late, we waive the dispatch fee.
