Most counties have one or two electric utilities. Bedford County has five. Met-Ed and Penelec, both FirstEnergy companies, serve part of it. The rest is cooperative territory split among New Enterprise Rural Electric, Somerset Rural Electric, Bedford Rural Electric and Valley Rural Electric. That matters more than it sounds. Each utility has its own rules for service upgrades, meter sockets and disconnects. An application that sails through with one can sit for weeks with another if the paperwork is wrong. We ask who sends your bill on the first call so nothing gets filed to the wrong company.
The dividing line is the same everywhere, though. Poles, lines and the meter belong to the utility. When a storm knocks out the whole road, they restore it. Maybe the lights are on at the neighbors' and off at your place. Maybe a breaker keeps tripping, or half the house is dead. Either way, that is on your side of the meter, and that is what we do.
Bundling work still makes sense in a rural county. One visit for a panel replacement, a few new circuits and a safety inspection saves you money and keeps the schedule simple.
