Electrical Service Across Berks County

Berks County has three electric utilities, and knowing which one you're on saves time. Met-Ed, part of FirstEnergy, is the primary provider and serves Reading. PPL Electric Utilities covers other portions of the county. And Kutztown runs its own borough-owned electric system, so a service upgrade there follows the borough's rules, not Met-Ed's. Whichever it is, the utility owns the line and the meter, and we coordinate any upgrade, meter relocation or disconnect with them directly. From the meter inward, the panel, the wiring and every outlet are our responsibility.

The county is large and our coverage doesn't stop at its edge. We also serve the neighboring counties of Chester, Montgomery, Lehigh, Lancaster, Lebanon and Schuylkill, so a Berks County call usually finds a crew already nearby rather than starting from Bucks County.

The work itself covers the full range: emergency troubleshooting at any hour, panel and breaker replacements, new dedicated circuits, EV charger installs, generator transfer switches, lighting design, ceiling fans, and the safety inspections buyers and sellers ask for. Common Electrical Projects in Berks County Homes

Half the homes in Berks County were built before 1969, and that decade left some signatures behind. Aluminum branch wiring was common through the late sixties and early seventies. It works, but the connections loosen with heat cycling, so warm outlets, flickering lights or a scorched receptacle deserve attention. We install properly rated connectors or replace the runs.

Panels are the second theme. A 100 amp panel was standard, and it is often maxed out once central air, an electric dryer and a workshop are on it. Then there are two-prong outlets. Grounding them, or protecting them with GFCI devices where a ground isn't practical, is inexpensive compared to the risk. An electrical safety inspection shows you where the house stands, and home EV charger installation usually starts with that same panel conversation.

Permits, Inspections and Your Utility in Berks County

Berks County is made up of many boroughs and townships, and under Pennsylvania's Uniform Construction Code each one decides how electrical permits get handled. Most contract a third-party inspection agency instead of running a building department, so Boyertown's process is not Hamburg's and neither is Reading's. We know the drill. We pull the permit under our license, schedule the inspection and are on site to walk the inspector through the work. You get the signed-off paperwork for your records.

Utility work is coordinated the same way. A service upgrade, a heavier meter base or a temporary disconnect for a panel swap has to be booked with Met-Ed, PPL or Kutztown's borough electric department, whichever feeds your house. We make that call and time the shutoff so you're dark for as little as possible. If the outage is on their poles, it's their repair. If it's your panel, your wiring or your outlets, that's us.
