PECO is the primary electric utility in Chester County. PPL Electric Utilities serves other portions. For a homeowner, the difference shows up when you upgrade. Each utility has its own form for a heavier service and its own meter base rules. Each also has its own schedule for the disconnect and reconnect during a panel swap. We handle all of that as part of every upgrade. What the utility owns ends at the meter. The panel, the wiring and every device inside are ours.

Chester County was in the path of Hurricane Ida's remnants in September 2021. Flash flooding hit along the Schuylkill and Brandywine watersheds. Water and electrical equipment do not mix well. The damage isn't always visible either. A submerged panel can look fine at first. It can fail a year later from corrosion inside. Start with the panel itself. Some panels installed in the late seventies and early eighties came from Federal Pacific or Zinsco. Both brands were later recalled. If the label on your panel door has either name, have it inspected.

Then capacity. A 100 or 150 amp panel was fine for 1983. It's tight once you add a heat pump and a Level 2 EV charger. Common projects:

Chester County's electrical permits run under the Pennsylvania Uniform Construction Code. That code puts your township or borough in charge. In practice, most townships here contract a third-party inspection agency to review plans and inspect the work. That means the process in West Chester, Kennett Square and Coatesville each looks a little different. We deal with it. We pull the permit under our license and schedule the rough and final inspections. Then we show up to walk the inspector through what we did. You get the approval paperwork, which matters at resale.

Electrical service

I was really impressed with Don and Engeli and the work they performed for me. We had a discussion on the best way to run the new line for the septic pump and I really appreciated the extra effort they made to keep the esthetic of my home's exterior. My panel says Federal Pacific. Do I need to replace it?

Have it inspected first. Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels from that era were later recalled. We recommend a look at any panel carrying either name. If it needs to go, you get a written quote. We pull the permit and arrange the disconnect with PECO or PPL.

My basement flooded during Ida. Is my wiring okay?

Maybe, but you should know for sure. The September 2021 flooding along the Schuylkill and Brandywine put electrical equipment in some Chester County basements underwater. Corrosion inside can cause failures long after everything dries. We open, test and document each item and quote only what actually needs replacing.

Can a 1983 house handle an EV charger?

Usually, with the right planning. A Level 2 charger needs its own circuit and enough spare room in the panel. We run a load calculation before quoting. Sometimes it fits as is. Sometimes the honest answer is a 200 amp upgrade first. Either way, we'll show you the numbers.

Who pulls the permit in my township?

We do, under Pennsylvania license PA075449. Chester County townships typically use a third-party inspection agency under the Uniform Construction Code. Each one has its own forms. We file, schedule the inspections and attend them. You don't have to visit a township office or track down an inspector.
