Open the panel door and read the label. If it says Federal Pacific or Zinsco, that panel is on the recall list, and we treat replacement as the first job. A 1961 panel is also usually 100 amps, which leaves little room for central air, a dryer and an EV charger together.
Then look at the outlets. Two-prong outlets mean no ground, so a surge strip protects nothing. Warm cover plates and lights that dim when the fridge kicks on point to loose aluminum connections behind the wall.

Aluminum branch circuits come next. We open every outlet, switch and light box on those circuits and remake the connection with a connector rated for aluminum to copper. Where a circuit is short, new copper is cheaper.
After that, the additions: a Level 2 EV charger on its own circuit, dedicated circuits for a kitchen remodel, and whole-home surge protection now that the outlets have a ground.
Berwyn has no borough government, so the township issues electrical permits under Pennsylvania's Uniform Construction Code. In Chester County that usually means a third-party inspection agency reviews the plan and checks the finished work. We handle the application, the scheduling and the inspection visit.

Berwyn Electrical FAQs
Look at the exposed cable in the basement or attic. Aluminum cable carries an AL or ALUMINUM stamp on the jacket, and the bare wire inside is silver rather than copper colored. Flickering lights and warm switch plates are the other clues.
We recommend it. Those panels sit on the recall list because their breakers can fail to trip. Until the swap, keep big loads off it. The written quote covers the panel, the permit and the PECO reconnect.
More of a shock risk. No ground means a fault has nowhere safe to go. Where the cable has a ground wire we install grounded outlets. Where it does not, we add GFCI protection.
Then the dispatch fee comes off the bill. We name a window and keep it, and if we miss it you do not pay for the trip. That holds at midnight on a holiday just like a weekday morning.
