Open the panel door and read the label. If it says Federal Pacific or Zinsco, that panel is on the recall list, and we treat replacement as the first job. A 1961 panel is also usually 100 amps, which leaves little room for central air, a dryer and an EV charger together.
Then look at the outlets. Two-prong outlets mean no ground, so a surge strip protects nothing. Warm cover plates and lights that dim when the fridge kicks on point to loose aluminum connections behind the wall.
