The Thomas Edison difference

Your Electricians in Dauphin County

Thomas Edison Electric's Dauphin County electricians work from Harrisburg and Hershey to Hummelstown, Middletown and Highspire. We also reach small boroughs like Halifax, Millersburg, Elizabethville and Lykens. We are a family-owned electrical contractor, licensed in Pennsylvania under PA075449. Our line answers 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Our electricians are direct employees, and the ones who serve Dauphin County dispatch from their own homes in the region. Each one carries a full stock of parts in a TEE van, and we book jobs in a way that lets one visit finish the work. You get a written quote before anything starts, and if we show up late, the dispatch fee is on us.

Four utilities, one call

Whether your power comes from PPL, Met-Ed or the Middletown or Royalton borough electric departments, we handle the coordination for service and meter work.

Written quote first

Every Dauphin County job starts with a price in writing. No surprise pricing, no add-ons that appear on the invoice later.

Open all night

Our 24/7 line runs 365 days a year, holidays included, so a dead panel in Hershey at midnight reaches a licensed electrician.

We eat the dispatch fee

Over 37,000 jobs completed since 2021, and rated 4.8 stars on Google.

Electrical Service Across Dauphin County

Four different utilities deliver power in Dauphin County, which is more than most counties we serve. PPL Electric Utilities is the primary utility. Met-Ed serves other areas. And two boroughs, Middletown and Royalton, run their own municipal electric systems. If you live in Middletown, the borough is your utility, not PPL, and that changes who we coordinate with when we upgrade your service or replace a meter socket. We sort that out before we schedule the job.

The line is the same in every case. The utility owns the poles, the lines and the meter. We own everything after the meter: the panel, the circuits, the outlets, the lights and whatever you plug into them. If the outage is on their side we will tell you so and save you a service call.

Our Dauphin County customers are in Harrisburg, Hershey, Hummelstown, Middletown, Highspire, Grantville and the smaller towns like Halifax, Millersburg, Gratz, Williamstown and Lykens. We also reach across the county line into Cumberland, Lebanon, Lancaster, Perry, York, Schuylkill, Juniata and Northumberland counties.

Common Electrical Projects in Dauphin County Homes

Half the homes in Dauphin County date to before 1972, and half after. That means a big slice of the housing stock went up when aluminum branch wiring was standard and a 100-amp panel counted as generous. Those homes are not unsafe by default. They are carrying loads their builders never pictured.

Here is what that looks like around Harrisburg, Hershey and Middletown.

  • Aluminum branch circuits that need approved connectors at every device, or a partial rewire.

  • Panels that are full, warm to the touch, or tripping under normal loads. We do circuit breaker repair and upgrades and full 200-amp service changes.

  • Two-prong outlets with no ground.

  • Not enough circuits in the kitchen. A dedicated circuit for the microwave or dishwasher solves most nuisance tripping.

  • A range, dryer or AC outlet added or moved for a new appliance.

Not sure what you have? A safety inspection gives you a written picture and a priority list.

Permits, Inspections and Your Utility in Dauphin County

Electrical permits in Dauphin County are a municipal matter under Pennsylvania's Uniform Construction Code. Harrisburg, Middletown, Hummelstown and each borough up to Lykens sets its own process, and most of them contract inspections to a third-party agency rather than staffing a building department. That is why the same panel job can involve a different form and a different inspector two towns over. We pull the permit as part of the job and schedule the inspection, and the cost is in your written quote.

On the utility side, a service upgrade or meter change means coordinating with whoever serves your address. That could be PPL Electric Utilities for most of the county, Met-Ed in some areas, or the Middletown or Royalton borough electric department if you live there. We make those arrangements. If your whole block is out, the utility is the right first call. If it is just your house, call us.

Electrical service

I was really impressed with Don and Engeli and the work they performed for me. We had a discussion on the best way to run the new line for the septic pump and I really appreciated the extra effort they made to keep the esthetic of my home's exterior. They were pleasant and professional and all my fans and lights work great! They were patient and waited until I approved everything. A great team!

Dauphin County Electrical FAQs

I live in Middletown. Does that change anything for a panel upgrade?

It changes who we coordinate with. Middletown runs its own borough electric department, as does Royalton, so the disconnect and reconnect for a service change go through the borough rather than PPL or Met-Ed. The work itself and the permit process are the same, and we handle both ends for you.

Are your electricians local to Harrisburg and Hershey?

They are. Every electrician on our Dauphin County calls works directly for Thomas Edison Electric. They dispatch from their own homes throughout the areas we serve, and each van carries a full stock of parts. So we book jobs to get the work done in one visit. If we miss the window, we waive the dispatch fee.

My Hershey home dates to the early 1970s. Should I worry about aluminum wiring?

Worry is the wrong word, but it is worth checking. Homes from that era often have aluminum branch circuits. Those circuits are fine when every connection uses the right connectors, and not fine when it doesn't. We can inspect the connections, correct them, or rewire circuits where that makes more sense.

Do you handle emergency calls in the smaller towns like Millersburg and Lykens?

Yes. Our 24/7 line covers all of Dauphin County, not just Harrisburg. That includes nights, weekends and holidays. If you smell something burning at the panel, see scorching at an outlet or lose power in part of the house, call, and we will walk you through what to do until we get there.
