The Thomas Edison difference

Your Hershey Electricians

Need a Hershey electrician? Thomas Edison Electric covers this Dauphin County community of 14,242 people, ZIP 17033. It sits right next to Hummelstown, 3.4 miles away, and Grantville at 6.3. Hershey's housing stock is newer than most of the county, with a typical build year around 1970. That means the electrical issues we see here differ from the older boroughs nearby.

Aluminum branch wiring, 100-amp panels, two-prong outlets and recalled Federal Pacific or Zinsco panels are the common finds instead of knob-and-tube. Every electrician we send is a direct employee, not a subcontractor, dispatching from home in a fully stocked TEE van. Call 717-274-2700 any hour, and we'll put the price in writing before work starts.

Local electricians, not subcontractors

Every Hershey call goes to a direct Thomas Edison Electric employee who dispatches from home in a fully stocked TEE van, never a subcontracted crew.

Why 1970s Wiring Needs a Different Approach

A 1970-era home swapped knob-and-tube problems for a different set. Builders leaned on aluminum for branch wiring through the decade. Those connections can loosen at outlets, switches and the panel itself after fifty-plus years of use. A warm cover plate or a light that flickers when a door slams are both worth a look.

Recalled Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels are the other issue tied to this era. Both brands were common in construction from those years. Both also have a documented history of breakers that fail to trip when they should. If your panel carries either name, replacing it moves to the top of the list.

We also handle the additions a 1970 house never planned for, like a home EV charger on its own circuit or a backup generator with an automatic transfer switch.

Common Electrical Projects in Hershey Homes

Aluminum wiring tops the list in Hershey. Loose connections at outlets, switches and the panel are the usual culprit behind warm cover plates or lights that dim for no reason, and we correct those joints with approved connectors rather than a full rewire in most cases.

A recalled Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel is the other common find in a 1970-era home. Both brands sit behind circuit breaker repair and upgrades on our list, since a breaker that won't trip is a real risk, not a theoretical one.

For newer additions, we run dedicated circuits for a workshop or a hot tub, and install EV chargers once the panel has the room to support one.

Permits, Inspections and Your Utility in Hershey

Hershey isn't its own municipality, so permits here go through the local township under Pennsylvania's Uniform Construction Code, with a third-party agency handling plan review and inspections, as in most of Dauphin County. We file the permit, schedule the inspector and keep the whole process inside the written quote you approved.

PPL Electric Utilities is the primary utility in Hershey. A panel upgrade or new service means we coordinate a disconnect and reconnect with PPL directly. A wider outage is PPL's to restore. Everything from the meter into your house is ours.

Electrical service

I was really impressed with Don and Engeli and the work they performed for me. We had a discussion on the best way to run the new line for the septic pump and I really appreciated the extra effort they made to keep the esthetic of my home's exterior. They were pleasant and professional and all my fans and lights work great! They were patient and waited until I approved everything. A great team!

Hershey Electrical FAQs

Do you send an electrician to Hershey at night?

Yes. Our line runs 24/7, 365 days a year, holidays included, and the electrician who answers lives in the area and dispatches from home in a fully stocked TEE van. Because the van already carries the parts, most Hershey calls finish in one visit instead of two. Call 717-274-2700 whenever the problem shows up.

My Hershey home was built around 1970. Should I worry about the wiring?

Worry isn't the right word, but it's worth checking. Homes from that era often used aluminum branch wiring. That wiring is safe when every connection uses the correct connectors, and less safe when it doesn't. We inspect the connections, correct what needs it, and tell you plainly what we find.

How do I know if my panel is a recalled Federal Pacific or Zinsco?

The brand name is usually printed inside the panel door. If you see either name, that's worth a call regardless of how the house otherwise feels. Both brands have a documented history of breakers that don't trip when they should. We can check it during a safety inspection.

Can a 1970s Hershey home handle a Level 2 EV charger?

Usually, once we check the panel. A 100-amp panel from that era often has little room left after normal household loads. If yours is full or carries a recalled brand, we upgrade to 200 amps first and give you a written price before anything is scheduled.
