Five electric providers share Bradford County, and that shapes how we work here. PPL Electric Utilities is the primary one. Claverack Rural Electric Cooperative, Tri-County Rural Electric Cooperative and Sullivan County Rural Electric Cooperative each serve their own pockets. Penelec, a FirstEnergy company, has a share as well. Cooperatives and investor-owned utilities handle service upgrades differently, from the application to the meter socket they want to see. We ask which one you're on before we quote a service change. Then we deal with them directly so you don't have to.
What we don't do is fix the utility's equipment. Lines, poles, transformers and the meter itself are theirs, and a storm outage along your road is their repair. The main breaker, the panel, the wiring in the walls and every outlet and fixture belong to you. Those are ours to repair, replace or improve.
Our coverage runs into the neighboring counties too: Tioga, Susquehanna, Sullivan, Wyoming and Lycoming. The same local crews serve all of them, dispatching from their own homes in the region. We bundle scheduled projects, whether a panel upgrade, a generator install or a subpanel for an outbuilding, so you get more done per visit.
With a median build year of 1969, the typical Bradford County house has wiring that has been working for over half a century. The most frequent issues we run into:
Aluminum branch circuits. Common from the mid sixties into the seventies. The metal creeps under its screws, connections loosen, and outlets run warm. We retrofit rated connectors or rewire the runs.
Undersized panels. 100 amps was standard then. Between an electric range, a dryer and a well pump, it fills up. A 200 amp upgrade coordinated with PPL or your cooperative solves it. Details at circuit breaker repair and upgrades.
Two-prong outlets. Ungrounded receptacles are everywhere in this era. We ground them properly or protect them with GFCI devices.
Standby power. A long rural line means a longer wait when the power goes out. A backup generator with a transfer switch keeps the furnace, the fridge and the well running.
Bradford County permits work the way Pennsylvania's Uniform Construction Code sets it up: the municipality is responsible. Most townships and boroughs here hand the job to a third-party inspection agency rather than run their own building office. The result is that the form, the fee and the inspector differ between Towanda, Canton and Athens. We take care of the whole thing. The permit goes in under our license, the inspection gets scheduled, and we're there when the inspector walks the job.
The utility coordination is the part homeowners find most confusing. That is why we ask early which company sends your bill. PPL, Penelec and the three cooperatives each have their own service upgrade process and their own meter requirements. We submit what they need and set the disconnect and reconnect so a panel swap is done in one day. Anything on their side of the meter is theirs. Everything from the meter in is ours.

It means the circuit likely has no ground, which is common in homes built around 1969. A ground protects you and your electronics when something faults. Depending on the wiring we can add a proper ground or install GFCI protection at the outlet. A safety inspection tells you which option fits.
