Four different electric providers serve Bucks County, and we work with all of them. PECO serves most of the county and is the utility most of our Bucks clients have. PPL Electric Utilities serves other areas, and Perkasie and Quakertown each run their own borough-owned electric systems. If you live in one of those two boroughs, a service upgrade goes through the borough, not PECO. The requirements differ there too. We sort that out on the first call.
Weather is part of the story here. The remnants of Hurricane Ida came through in September 2021. Bucks County saw severe flash flooding, widespread power outages and a tornado that same night. That night is why we talk with Bucks County homeowners about whole-home surge protection. We also recommend backup generators with transfer switches, plus post-flood inspections of any panel or outlet that took on water.
The other half of our Bucks County work is ordinary and important. We handle emergency repairs at any hour, panel replacements, and dedicated circuits for kitchens and workshops. We also handle EV chargers, lighting, ceiling fans, and safety inspections for buyers and sellers. Our crews start the day from home, with the van stocked for the job. We also cover the neighbors. On the Pennsylvania side that's Montgomery, Lehigh, Northampton and Philadelphia Counties, and in New Jersey it's Mercer and Burlington Counties.
The median Bucks County home dates to 1975. That means a lot of the houses we see are carrying original 1970s electrical systems. Three things come up again and again:
Aluminum branch wiring. Its connections loosen over time and can overheat. We correct them with properly rated connectors or rewire.
100 amp panels that are out of room and out of date. Central air, a hot tub and an EV charger need more. A panel upgrade to 200 amps, arranged with PECO, PPL or your borough, fixes it.
Two-prong ungrounded outlets, which we ground or protect with GFCIs.
The newer request is home EV charger installation, which nearly always starts with a look at panel capacity. And since Ida in 2021, backup generator installation and whole-home surge protection have become common requests across the county. If your basement took water that year, get a safety inspection of the panel and any outlets below the flood line.
Permits in Bucks County go through your municipality under the Pennsylvania Uniform Construction Code. Most townships and boroughs here contract with a third-party inspection agency to review plans and inspect work. That means Newtown does it one way, Doylestown another, and Bristol a third. Pulling permits across the county day in and day out means we know the process wherever you are. We file it, schedule the inspection and meet the inspector.
On the utility side, PECO is the company most Bucks homeowners deal with. PPL serves other areas, and Perkasie and Quakertown residents are on borough-owned systems. For a service upgrade, meter relocation or panel swap, we book the disconnect and reconnect with whichever one you have. When a storm takes out the lines, that is the utility's job to restore. From the meter into your house, it's ours, any hour, any day of the year.

Yes, and the September 2021 outages made a lot of people think about it. A standby generator with a transfer switch keeps your sump pump, furnace and refrigerator running during a PECO or PPL outage. We size it, install it, pull the permit and coordinate the utility side. Financing is available.
For most of the county it's PECO. PPL Electric Utilities serves other areas, and Perkasie and Quakertown run their own borough electric departments. Your bill will tell you. It matters for upgrades and meter work because each has its own process, and we coordinate with all four.
