Start at the fuse box. Plenty of 1938 houses still have one, and a blown fuse at night means a hunt for the right size. We replace the box with a breaker panel and bring the service up from 60 amps to 200. That one project settles most of what an old house complains about.
Next, the knob-and-tube. It may still feed a few ceiling lights or a bedroom circuit, and it has no ground. We trace it, retire what is live, and run new copper. Ungrounded outlets get a real ground or GFCI protection.
