Kutztown's Own Power System, Explained

Kutztown is unusual for Berks County: the borough runs its own electric utility, Kutztown Borough Electric, rather than buying power through Met-Ed or PPL like most neighboring towns. That changes who you call about an outage, but not who fixes your panel or wiring, which is still us.

The typical Kutztown home dates to 1962, an age that often brings aluminum branch wiring, 100-amp panels and two-prong outlets, plus the occasional recalled Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel. We check the panel brand first on nearly every visit.

Homes on the edge of the borough may instead sit on Met-Ed or PPL Electric Utilities lines. Either way, we coordinate the utility side of any upgrade so the paperwork matches the meter that actually feeds your house.

Common Electrical Projects in Kutztown Homes

A 1962 Kutztown home usually still has its original 100-amp panel, and a workshop or central air can push it past its limit fast. A 200-amp panel upgrade fixes the capacity problem and replaces a recalled Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel at once.

Aluminum branch wiring shows up just as often. Warm cover plates and flickering lights are the tell, fixed with rated connectors at every joint rather than a full rewire. Two-prong outlets get grounded or GFCI-covered.

Newer projects fit in too: a home EV charger on its own circuit, or custom lighting for a remodeled kitchen.

Permits, Inspections and Your Utility in Kutztown

Like every borough in the state, Kutztown processes electrical permits under Pennsylvania's Uniform Construction Code, with the actual inspection contracted to a third-party agency rather than borough staff. We take the paperwork off your hands: filing under our license, setting the inspection date and being there for the walkthrough.

Utility coordination depends on which system feeds your house. Inside the borough, that's often Kutztown Borough Electric, a municipal system separate from the investor-owned utilities nearby. Toward the edges, it may be Met-Ed or PPL Electric Utilities instead. We confirm which applies before scheduling any disconnect.

Electrical service

I was really impressed with Don and Engeli and the work they performed for me. We had a discussion on the best way to run the new line for the septic pump and I really appreciated the extra effort they made to keep the esthetic of my home's exterior. They were pleasant and professional and all my fans and lights work great! They were patient and waited until I approved everything. A great team!

Kutztown Electrical FAQs

Why does Kutztown have its own electric utility?

The borough owns and runs Kutztown Borough Electric instead of buying power through Met-Ed or PPL like most surrounding towns. Outages get restored differently, but electrical work inside your home, from panel to outlets, still goes through a licensed electrician like us.

Is a 1960s Kutztown panel safe for an EV charger?

Usually, once we look. A Level 2 charger needs its own circuit, and a 100-amp panel from 1962 often has little room left. We check first, and a 200-amp upgrade quote comes in writing before any charger work begins.

Do you work on both sides of the Kutztown Borough Electric line?

Yes. Whether your house sits on the borough's own system or on Met-Ed or PPL near the edge of town, the wiring, panel and outlets inside are ours. Tell us your utility and we handle the rest.

Is there an emergency electrician in Kutztown at night?

Yes, 24/7, holidays included. Our electricians live in the area and dispatch from home in fully stocked TEE vans, ready to work. Call 610-782-9000 whenever the problem shows up, with a written quote before any repair begins.
