The Thomas Edison difference

Ardmore Electricians for Prewar Homes

An Ardmore electrician from Thomas Edison Electric knows what a 1942 house hides in its walls, because the typical home in ZIP 19003 dates to that year. Ardmore is not a borough. It is a community within Montgomery County that runs into Wynnewood, Narberth and Haverford, and our electricians cover all four from their own homes in stocked TEE vans.

We are a family-owned, multigenerational company with over 37,000 jobs completed since 2021. We hold PA license PA075449, carry full insurance and answer the phone 24/7, 365 days a year. Call 610-520-1300. Before any work begins you get a written quote, and a late arrival means we waive the dispatch fee.

Knob-and-tube mapped and removed

We trace every live remnant in a 1942 Ardmore home, then replace it with grounded copper, priced in writing.

Fuse box to breakers

A 60-amp fuse service becomes a 200-amp breaker panel, with the PECO reconnect on our calendar, not yours.

Grounding done right

Two-prong outlets get a true ground where the wiring allows and GFCI protection where it does not.

Employees, not subcontractors

The electrician at your door in ZIP 19003 works for us, passed a background check and trains weekly.

24/7, 365 days

Nights, weekends and holidays included. Call 610-520-1300 any hour, any day.

Licensed and insured

PA license PA075449, 4.8 stars on Google, over 37,000 jobs completed since 2021, and financing available if you ask.

What Ardmore's Older Homes Need

Ardmore's housing stock runs old. Half the homes here went up before 1942. Behind the plaster that often means knob-and-tube remnants, a fuse box, a 60-amp service and two-prong outlets with no ground. Those systems ran a radio and a few lamps well. They struggle with central air, a dryer and a home office.

So the first visit is usually about mapping what you have. We trace the old circuits, check the service size and look at what the fuse box still feeds. Then you get a written plan with prices, split into what needs attention now and what can wait. No pressure and no surprise pricing.

Our electricians are Thomas Edison Electric employees, not subcontractors, and they live around Ardmore, Merion Station and Gladwyne. Each van carries the parts for most repairs, so one trip usually settles it. PECO Energy Company runs the lines here. When the remnants of Hurricane Ida flooded Montgomery County in September 2021, PECO restored the power. The soaked panels and outlets inside the houses were our side of the job.

Common Electrical Projects in Ardmore Homes

Prewar houses in Ardmore give us three recurring jobs, and a fourth that is new.

First, wiring. Knob-and-tube cannot sit under attic insulation, and it has no ground. We remove it in stages if you prefer, one floor at a time, and each stage gets a written price.

Next, the service. A 60-amp fuse box has no spare capacity. A breaker panel upgrade to 200 amps changes that, and it makes every later circuit possible.

Then the outlets. We ground two-prong receptacles or protect them with GFCI, and we add dedicated circuits for the range, dryer and air conditioner.

The new one is the driveway. A Level 2 EV charger needs its own circuit and enough service behind it. In a 1942 Ardmore house, that usually means the panel comes first.

Permits, Inspections and Your Utility in Ardmore

Ardmore is not a borough, so the township issues its electrical permits under Pennsylvania's Uniform Construction Code. In Montgomery County that usually means a third-party inspection agency reviews the plan and inspects the finished work. We file, we schedule, and we meet the inspector. All of it is part of the written quote you approve up front.

PECO Energy Company supplies power to Ardmore and ZIP 19003. A service upgrade or meter base replacement needs PECO to disconnect at the meter and reconnect when we finish. We arrange that date. Storm outages and downed wires are PECO's to fix. The fuse box, the panel and the wiring inside are ours, at any hour.

Electrical service

I was really impressed with Don and Engeli and the work they performed for me. We had a discussion on the best way to run the new line for the septic pump and I really appreciated the extra effort they made to keep the esthetic of my home's exterior. They were pleasant and professional and all my fans and lights work great! They were patient and waited until I approved everything. A great team!

Ardmore Electrical FAQs

Does Thomas Edison Electric send a local electrician to Ardmore?

Yes. Our Ardmore electricians live around the area, in and near Wynnewood, Narberth and Haverford, and they dispatch from their own homes in stocked TEE vans. They are our employees, not subcontractors. Call 610-520-1300 at any hour. If we arrive late, we waive the dispatch fee.

Do I have to rewire my whole 1942 Ardmore house at once?

No. Often only a few knob-and-tube runs remain after earlier rewires. We map what is live, then quote the removal in stages if you want to spread the cost. Financing is available too. Nothing starts until you approve the written price.

Can a 60-amp service handle central air and an EV charger?

Almost never. A 60-amp service dates from a time before central air and electric dryers. Adding a Level 2 charger on top pushes it well past its limit. A 200-amp panel upgrade solves that, and we coordinate the PECO reconnect for you.

Who do I call when the power goes out in Ardmore?

If the whole street is dark, call PECO, because the outage is on their lines. If only your house lost power, or just some rooms, the fault is probably inside, and that is our job. We answer 24/7. If a panel sat in water during the Ida flooding of September 2021, ask about a safety inspection.
