Homes from 1975 often carry aluminum branch circuits. The wire itself is fine. The trouble is at every screw terminal, where aluminum expands, loosens and heats up over the decades. Warm cover plates, flickering lights and a faint hot smell at an outlet are the signs. We remake each joint with a rated connector, or run new copper to the rooms that need it.
The panel is the second thing we check. A 100-amp panel from 1975 is usually full, and if the label reads Federal Pacific or Zinsco, the breakers may not trip on a fault. Those panels come out. A 200-amp upgrade solves both problems at once, with PECO resetting the meter.
Two-prong outlets fill out the list, and so does water. The remnants of Hurricane Ida flooded parts of Montgomery County in September 2021 and cut power widely. A panel that took water then deserves a look now.
Aluminum wiring repair comes first, because it is a safety issue rather than a convenience. We open every outlet, switch and junction box, remake the connection with a rated connector and torque it to spec. Rooms with heavy loads, like the kitchen, sometimes get new copper instead. You get a written price for either path before we start.
Panel replacement comes second. A Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel is a replacement, no exceptions. A sound but full 100-amp panel becomes a 200-amp panel when the house wants a Level 2 EV charger or a heat pump. Dedicated circuits for a workshop or a second freezer ride along on the same permit.
Third, the small stuff a 1975 house never planned for. GFCI protection in the kitchen and baths. A proper ground for two-prong outlets. Whole-home surge protection at the panel. And a standby generator with a transfer switch, which we size and install as a certified Generac dealer.
Horsham Township issues electrical permits under the Pennsylvania Uniform Construction Code. Like most townships in Montgomery County, it hands the inspections to a third-party agency. Aluminum wiring repair, a panel change and a generator each need a permit and a final inspection. We pull the permit, book the inspector and walk the job with them, and the fee sits inside your written quote.

Sometimes. A hot tub wants a 50-amp circuit and a heat pump wants more, and a full 100-amp panel has neither to spare. We run a load calculation first. If the panel has room, the new circuit goes in. If not, the 200-amp upgrade comes first, and both prices come in writing.
