The typical Columbia home dates to 1938. Houses from that era commonly still have knob-and-tube remnants, fuse boxes, 60-amp electrical services and ungrounded outlets, especially in a borough with this much older housing stock concentrated close together.
None of that is rare, and none of it needs to stay as it is. We replace fuse boxes with modern breaker panels sized for actual loads, remove or isolate old knob-and-tube wiring, and add grounding or GFCI protection to outlets that never had it. Worth addressing before it becomes one. A 60-amp fuse box was standard in 1938 but struggles with a modern load, and fuses can mask a wiring problem instead of catching it. We replace it with a properly sized breaker panel, priced in writing first.
Often, once the panel is upgraded. A Level 2 charger needs its own circuit and real capacity, which a 60-amp fuse box usually can't spare. We run a load calculation and quote any panel work in writing.
If the whole street or block is dark, that's a PPL outage, and PPL handles the repair to the lines. If only your house lost power, the trouble is most likely behind the meter, and that's ours, any hour.
