Electrical Service Across Lancaster County

PPL Electric Utilities serves most of Lancaster County. Met-Ed covers parts of it. The borough of Ephrata runs its own electric system. That means an Ephrata address has the borough, not PPL, as your utility. That difference matters when we upgrade a service or swap a meter base. We schedule the disconnect and reconnect with whoever owns the meter. We handle that call and the timing.

The rule for who fixes what is simple. Poles, lines, transformers and the meter are the utility's. The panel, the wiring, the outlets and the fixtures are yours, and that is what we service. If the whole street is dark, the utility should hear from you first. If it is only your house, or only part of it, call us.

We cover Lancaster County end to end: Lancaster, Millersville, Willow Street, Landisville, Lititz, Manheim, Ephrata, Akron, Denver and Adamstown. Coverage also reaches Elizabethtown, Mount Joy, Marietta, Columbia, New Holland, Gap, Paradise, Strasburg, Quarryville and the townships around it. We also serve neighboring Chester, Berks, Lebanon, Dauphin and York counties.

Common Electrical Projects in Lancaster County Homes

The median Lancaster County home dates to 1978. That is right in the stretch when aluminum branch wiring, 100-amp panels and two-prong outlets were standard. A home from that era in Lititz, Manheim or Elizabethtown often carries a modern load on a 1970s service.

This is what we handle most often in Lancaster County.

  • Home EV charger installation, which usually starts with a panel capacity check and often ends with a 200-amp service upgrade.

  • Panel replacement and circuit breaker upgrades when the old panel is full or tripping.

  • Correcting aluminum branch circuits with approved connectors at every device.

  • Grounding two-prong outlets or protecting them with GFCI devices.

  • Dedicated circuits for kitchen remodels, workshops, hot tubs and mini-split heat pumps.

  • Whole-home surge protection and standby generators with transfer switches. These matter most where a well pump and a freezer cannot wait out an outage.

If you are not sure what your house has, a safety inspection gives you a written list you can act on.

Permits, Inspections and Your Utility in Lancaster County

Lancaster County has a long list of boroughs and townships. Under Pennsylvania's Uniform Construction Code, each one issues its own electrical permits. Most hire a third-party agency to inspect. In practice that means the process in Lancaster city, Lititz, Ephrata and Quarryville can each look a little different. We deal with that variety all the time. Pulling the permit and scheduling the inspection are part of the job. Both are in your written quote.

Utilities work the same way. For most of the county that is PPL Electric Utilities; for some areas it is Met-Ed. Inside Ephrata borough, it is the borough's own electric department. We schedule a service upgrade or meter base swap with the right one. That keeps the house without power for as short a time as possible. Neighborhood outage, call the utility. Problem inside your walls, call us.

Electrical service

I was really impressed with Don and Engeli and the work they performed for me. We had a discussion on the best way to run the new line for the septic pump and I really appreciated the extra effort they made to keep the esthetic of my home's exterior. They were pleasant and professional and all my fans and lights work great! They were patient and waited until I approved everything. A great team!

Lancaster County Electrical FAQs

I live in Ephrata. Is PPL my electric company?

Probably not. Ephrata borough runs its own electric system. If you are inside the borough, your utility is the borough itself. That changes who we work with for a service upgrade or meter change, but nothing else about the job. Outside the borough, PPL or Met-Ed is likely your utility.

Can my 1970s Lancaster County home handle an EV charger?

Often yes, sometimes only after a panel upgrade. A home built around 1978 often has a 100-amp service, and a Level 2 charger is a big new load. We do a load calculation and tell you in writing whether the existing panel has room. Then we quote the upgrade if it does not.

Do you have electricians based around Lancaster County?

Yes. Our Lancaster County electricians are our own people, and they live and work in the area. They leave from their own homes in stocked TEE vans. That makes the county part of our normal territory, not a special request. Our 24/7 line covers the whole county, including the far corners around Quarryville, Gap and Adamstown.

Do you work in the smaller villages, not just Lancaster city?

Yes. Intercourse, Bird In Hand, Paradise, Strasburg, Willow Street and every other community in Lancaster County get the same crew. They also get the same written quote and permit-and-inspection process. We also cross into Chester, Berks, Lebanon, Dauphin and York counties when the job calls for it.
