A City Built Before Modern Wiring Codes

The typical Lancaster home dates to 1938, well before most of today's wiring rules existed. Knob-and-tube remnants, fuse boxes, 60-amp services and ungrounded outlets are still common finds behind the walls of the city's older blocks.

PPL Electric Utilities delivers power through most of the city, with Met-Ed reaching some outlying addresses. The utility owns the pole, the line and the meter. Everything on your side of that meter, panel, wiring, outlets and fixtures, is our job, at any hour.

Our electricians work for Thomas Edison Electric directly, never as subcontractors, and they head out from their own homes across the county rather than one central yard. Call 717-274-2700 whether the job is a single flickering light or a full rewire.

Common Electrical Projects in Lancaster Homes

A city built mostly before 1938 means old systems are the rule, not the exception. When knob-and-tube wiring is still live, we replace it rather than patch around it. Fuse boxes come out in favor of a modern breaker panel sized for real use, usually a 200-amp upgrade.

Ungrounded, two-prong outlets are next. We ground what we can and add GFCI protection everywhere else, especially kitchens, baths and anywhere near water.

Once the basics are handled, Lancaster homeowners often add what a 1930s house never had. That means dedicated circuits for modern kitchens, a home EV charger, or a standby generator for the next outage. Every one of those additions starts with checking whether the panel has room.

Permits, Inspections and Your Utility in Lancaster

Lancaster issues electrical permits under Pennsylvania's Uniform Construction Code, and like most municipalities in the county, it works through a third-party inspection agency rather than running its own building department. We handle the permit application and the inspector's visit as part of the job, not an extra step you manage.

PPL Electric Utilities serves most of the city, with Met-Ed covering some nearby addresses. A panel upgrade or new service needs a scheduled disconnect and reconnect at the meter, and we book that with whichever utility is yours. Outages across the neighborhood are the utility's fix, while a problem confined to your house is ours, day or night.

Electrical service

I was really impressed with Don and Engeli and the work they performed for me. We had a discussion on the best way to run the new line for the septic pump and I really appreciated the extra effort they made to keep the esthetic of my home's exterior. They were pleasant and professional and all my fans and lights work great! They were patient and waited until I approved everything. A great team!

Lancaster Electrical FAQs

Is knob-and-tube wiring dangerous in an old Lancaster house?

It can be, especially if it has been spliced into or buried under insulation over the years. We inspect what is still live, remove what needs to go, and replace fuse boxes with a modern panel. A safety inspection gives you a written report to work from.

The power just went out. Do I call PPL or you?

Look around first. A whole block dark means it is PPL's outage to fix. If only your house lost power, or half your circuits are dead, the issue is likely inside your walls, which is our territory. Call us any hour to find out.

Does the permit process differ across Lancaster County?

Yes. Every borough and township here issues its own permits under the same state code. Each one hires its own inspection agency, so paperwork looks different from Millersville to Willow Street to the city itself. We manage that variation for every job.

Do you offer financing for a full rewire or panel job?

Yes, ask when you get your quote. Big projects like a rewire or a 200-amp panel upgrade can be paid over time. We write down every price before work begins, so there are no surprises partway through.
