Electrical Service in and Around Elizabethtown

The typical Elizabethtown home dates to 1964. Aluminum branch wiring, 100-amp panels and two-prong outlets are common for houses of that era, and a recalled Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel is common enough that we check for it on nearly every service call.

We remake aluminum connections with rated connectors, replace recalled panels with a modern, properly sized one, and ground or GFCI-protect two-prong outlets throughout the house. Most service calls here trace back to the same handful of issues, which is why a full safety inspection up front usually saves a second visit later.

Elizabethtown is one of many stops for our electricians, who live across Lancaster County and dispatch from home rather than a shared yard. Mount Joy and Marietta get the identical crew, the identical pricing and the identical written quote.

Common Electrical Projects in Elizabethtown Homes

Start with the panel. A 1964 home in Elizabethtown often still runs on 100 amps, sometimes under a recalled Federal Pacific or Zinsco label. A 200-amp panel upgrade retires the recalled panel and adds capacity in the same visit.

Next, the wiring itself. Warm cover plates or lights that dim under load are classic signs of a loose aluminum connection, and we remake those joints with the right connectors. Two-prong outlets get a real ground or GFCI protection at the same time.

Then come the additions a 1964 house never planned for. A dedicated circuit covers a modern kitchen or workshop, and a home EV charger gets its own line, sized correctly from the start.

Permits, Inspections and Your Utility in Elizabethtown

Elizabethtown Borough issues electrical permits under Pennsylvania's Uniform Construction Code. Like most boroughs in the county, it relies on a third-party agency to review plans and inspect the finished work. We pull the permit, schedule the inspection and walk the inspector through the job, all inside the written quote you approve first.

PPL Electric Utilities serves Elizabethtown. A service upgrade, panel swap or new meter needs a disconnect and reconnect on PPL's side, and we book that timing directly. A borough-wide outage is PPL's to restore. Trouble at just your house, at any hour, is ours.

Electrical service

I was really impressed with Don and Engeli and the work they performed for me. We had a discussion on the best way to run the new line for the septic pump and I really appreciated the extra effort they made to keep the esthetic of my home's exterior. They were pleasant and professional and all my fans and lights work great! They were patient and waited until I approved everything. A great team!

Elizabethtown Electrical FAQs

Is aluminum wiring in an Elizabethtown home actually dangerous?

It can be, if the connections were never updated. Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper, so joints loosen over time and build up heat at outlets and switches. The fix isn't a full rewire. We remake each connection with connectors rated for aluminum, which resolves the risk without opening every wall.

My Elizabethtown house still has a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel. Is that urgent?

Worth scheduling soon. Both brands were recalled over breakers that can fail to trip during a fault, and a 1964-era home is a common place to find one. We quote the replacement, usually to 200 amps, in writing before starting.

Can a 1960s Elizabethtown kitchen remodel handle modern appliances?

Usually, with a dedicated circuit or two added first. A double oven, microwave and induction cooktop each want their own circuit, and a 1964-era kitchen was rarely wired for all three. We size the additions to the panel and put the price in writing before we start.

Who do I call when the power goes out in Elizabethtown, you or PPL?

Start outside. A dark block or street means a PPL outage, and their crews handle the repair to the lines. A dark house while the neighbors still have power points to something behind the meter, which is our job at any hour.
