Three Utilities, One Ephrata Address

Most of the area around Ephrata gets its power from PPL Electric Utilities, and Met-Ed reaches some nearby addresses too. Inside the borough itself, though, a portion of homes buy electricity from Ephrata's own municipal electric department instead of a big utility. Knowing which one serves your address matters when a service upgrade needs a coordinated shutoff at the meter.

The typical Ephrata home dates to 1971. Aluminum branch wiring, 100-amp panels and two-prong outlets show up constantly at that age, and a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel is not a rare find either. We check the panel brand first on almost every visit.

Every electrician we send is on our payroll, not a subcontractor's, and they leave home each morning in a fully stocked TEE van. Call 610-777-7600 any hour for wiring that is acting up, a panel that needs replacing, or a new circuit for the kitchen.

Common Electrical Projects in Ephrata Homes

Panels come first. A 1971 Ephrata house often runs on 100 amps, and if the panel reads Federal Pacific or Zinsco, we recommend replacing it before anything else. A 200-amp panel upgrade clears out the recalled equipment and adds room to grow.

Aluminum branch wiring is next on the list. Warm outlet covers and lights that dim under load usually trace back to loose aluminum connections, which we remake with the right hardware or replace with copper.

After that come the additions a 1971 house was never wired for. A home EV charger needs its own circuit and enough panel capacity, and a standby generator with an automatic transfer switch covers the next outage. As a certified Generac dealer, we handle both from quote to install.

Permits, Inspections and Your Utility in Ephrata

Ephrata Borough issues electrical permits under Pennsylvania's Uniform Construction Code, and like most municipalities here, it uses a third-party agency for plan review and inspection. We pull the permit, schedule the inspector and keep the whole process inside your written quote.

PPL Electric Utilities serves most of the surrounding area, though some addresses inside the borough buy power from Ephrata's own electric department instead, and Met-Ed reaches other pockets nearby. Whichever one is yours, a panel upgrade or meter move needs a scheduled disconnect and reconnect, and we handle that call. Storm damage to the lines outside is the utility's repair. Everything from the meter inward is ours, any hour you need us.

Electrical service

I was really impressed with Don and Engeli and the work they performed for me. We had a discussion on the best way to run the new line for the septic pump and I really appreciated the extra effort they made to keep the esthetic of my home's exterior. They were pleasant and professional and all my fans and lights work great! They were patient and waited until I approved everything. A great team!

Ephrata Electrical FAQs

I see three electric companies listed for Ephrata. Which one is mine?

Check your bill or meter. Most of the surrounding township runs on PPL, some nearby addresses run on Met-Ed, and homes inside the borough itself may buy power from Ephrata's own municipal electric department. We confirm the right one before we schedule any upgrade that touches the meter.

Can a 1971 Ephrata home handle an EV charger?

Usually, after a load check. A Level 2 charger draws a lot on its own circuit, and a 100-amp panel from 1971 often has little room left. If yours is full or carries a recalled Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel, we quote a 200-amp upgrade first.

Are Ephrata electricians from Thomas Edison actually your own employees?

Yes. Every electrician we send is hired directly by Thomas Edison Electric, not a subcontractor, and lives in the area they serve. They leave home each morning in a fully stocked TEE van, ready for that day's calls.

What should I have checked before buying an older Ephrata house?

Start with the panel brand and the branch wiring. A Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel needs replacing rather than repairing, and aluminum wiring needs every connection inspected. Our electrical safety inspection covers both and gives you a written list before you close.
