The typical Conshohocken home dates to 1964. Houses from that era commonly have aluminum wiring on the branch circuits, a 100-amp panel that's likely maxed out by now, and two-prong outlets with no ground path. Recalled Federal Pacific or Zinsco panels are common finds too, especially in homes that haven't been updated since they were built.
We treat the panel as the starting point on almost every older Conshohocken call. The remnants of Hurricane Ida caused catastrophic flash flooding and widespread power outages across Montgomery County in September 2021. A 1964 Conshohocken house was wired for a much lighter load than it carries now. Central air, a home office, an induction range, and often a car that plugs in overnight. The original 100-amp panel usually can't keep up.
Start with the panel. If the label reads Federal Pacific or Zinsco, replacement is the safer call over a repair. A 200-amp panel upgrade clears the recalled equipment and adds real capacity in one project.
Next, the wiring. Warm cover plates and flickering lights point to loose aluminum connections. We remake those joints with the right connectors, or pull new copper where that makes more sense.
Then there are the additions a 1964 house never planned for. A dedicated line for a Level 2 EV charger, or a standby generator with an automatic transfer switch for the next long outage.
Conshohocken is its own borough, and it permits electrical work under Pennsylvania's statewide Uniform Construction Code. Like most Montgomery County municipalities, it typically relies on a third-party inspection agency for plan review and inspections rather than running its own building department. We pull the permit, schedule the inspection and walk the inspector through the finished work. It's part of the written quote you already approved, not an extra line item.
