The Thomas Edison difference

Your Electricians in Sullivan County

Sullivan County has fewer than six thousand residents and four different electric utilities. That combination is one you do not see in many places. Thomas Edison Electric's Sullivan County electricians work here anyway. We are a family-owned company, and the electricians who cover this county are our own employees, not subcontractors. They take calls from Dushore, Laporte, Eagles Mere, Forksville, Hillsgrove, Lopez, Mildred and Muncy Valley.

Most homes here are owner-occupied, and an owner tends to want things done right rather than done fast. We get it. PA license PA075449, fully insured, and a written quote before we start.

Four utilities, one contractor

PPL, Sullivan County REC, Claverack REC or Penelec, we know each one's upgrade and reconnect process and coordinate it for you.

Rural jobs done in one visit

The van that comes to Laporte carries a full stock of parts, so we plan Sullivan County work to finish on the first visit.

Owner priorities

The people who own most Sullivan County homes plan to stay, so we quote everything in writing and let you decide what is worth fixing now.

Early 1970s wiring know-how

Aluminum branch circuits and ungrounded outlets are typical of the county's 1973 median home, and we fix both without drama.

Nights, weekends, holidays

24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If we are late, we waive the dispatch fee.

Licensed and rated

Licensed in Pennsylvania as PA075449, insured, and rated 4.8 stars on Google.

Electrical Service Across Sullivan County

A call from Laporte is a local call for us. Our electricians dispatch from their own homes in the region, in TEE vans stocked for the work. We still confirm the scope by phone so the van arrives ready. We serve the whole county and the five that surround it: Bradford, Columbia, Luzerne, Lycoming and Wyoming.

Sullivan County packs an unusually crowded utility map for a county this size. PPL Electric Utilities is the primary provider. Sullivan County Rural Electric Cooperative and Claverack Rural Electric Cooperative each serve their own member territories. Penelec covers a portion as well. Four utilities means four sets of service-upgrade procedures, four disconnect schedules and four meter specifications. We have worked with all of them. You tell us who sends your electric bill, and we take it from there.

The rule of thumb is the same no matter which one you have. Lines, poles, transformer and meter belong to the utility. The service panel, the wiring, the outlets and the fixtures belong to you. Keeping those safe is our job, and our license covers it. For anything past the meter, at any hour, call us.

Common Electrical Projects in Sullivan County Homes

When we walk into a Sullivan County house built around 1973, the county median, we check three things first.

First, the wiring at the outlets. If the conductors are silver instead of copper, that means aluminum branch wiring. We check every connection in the house and secure it with approved copper pigtails. Second, the outlets themselves. Two-prong receptacles mean no ground, which leaves computers, TVs and well pump controls exposed to surges. Third, the panel. Builders sized a 100 amp service from that decade for a house with a lot less plugged in.

Those three items drive most of our work here. We do panel upgrades to 200 amps, grounded outlet replacement, and whole-home surge protection. Add dedicated circuits for a well pump, a heat pump or a workshop. Then a 1973 house is ready for another fifty years.

Permits, Inspections and Your Utility in Sullivan County

Sullivan County follows the same rule as the rest of Pennsylvania. The state Uniform Construction Code covers electrical work, and the municipality administers it. Very few townships this small run their own building department, so most contract with a third-party inspection agency. That means the person who inspects your panel in Dushore may not be the person who inspects one in Forksville. We file the permit through your municipality, schedule the inspection, and stay until the inspector signs off.

The utility step needs more attention here than usual. A PPL customer, a Sullivan County Rural Electric Cooperative member, a Claverack member and a Penelec customer all go through different channels. Each one schedules a disconnect and approves a new meter base differently. We sort out which one applies to you and handle the coordination. Their side ends at the meter. Ours begins there, and it includes the paperwork.

Electrical service

I was really impressed with Don and Engeli and the work they performed for me. We had a discussion on the best way to run the new line for the septic pump and I really appreciated the extra effort they made to keep the esthetic of my home's exterior. They were pleasant and professional and all my fans and lights work great! They were patient and waited until I approved everything. A great team!

Sullivan County Electrical FAQs

Which utility do I have in Sullivan County?

Check your bill. It will come from PPL Electric Utilities, Sullivan County Rural Electric Cooperative, Claverack Rural Electric Cooperative or Penelec. If you are not sure, tell us your address when you call and we will figure it out with you. The answer changes who schedules the disconnect on a service upgrade, not the quality of the wiring work.

Is it worth calling you for a small job in Sullivan County?

Yes. We would rather come out for a tripping breaker than for the fire it can turn into. Our electricians are local to this part of the state, so a small call in Laporte is a normal day. If you have a few small things, tell us all of them when you call. We bring what you need and take care of the whole list in one visit.

Can you install a standby generator on a co-op account?

Yes. The generator and automatic transfer switch sit on your side of the meter. The utility's role is small: knowing the equipment is there, and approving anything that touches the service entrance. We handle that notification along with the permit, whether your account is with Sullivan County REC, Claverack, PPL or Penelec.

What does a written quote cover?

Everything we plan to do, itemized, with the total at the bottom, before any work begins. If we open a wall in Eagles Mere and find a surprise, we stop and show you. Then we put the change in writing too. You approve it or you do not. Either way, the bill matches what you signed.
