Electrical Work Across a 1938-Era City

The typical Williamsport home dates to 1938. Fuse boxes, knob-and-tube remnants, 60-amp services and ungrounded outlets still turn up on service calls across the city, especially in the older blocks near downtown. We check the panel first, then plan the rest of the visit around what's actually behind the wall.

PPL Electric Utilities delivers power to most of the city. A service upgrade or meter move gets scheduled directly with PPL, since it keeps the lines and the pole running. Everything from the meter into your house is ours, day or night.

Our electricians are employed directly by Thomas Edison Electric, never subcontracted, and they dispatch from their own homes instead of one central yard. That's the same crew covering Montoursville, Linden, Montgomery, Cogan Station and Muncy, so a call from anywhere in the city reaches someone who already knows the area.

Common Electrical Projects in Williamsport Homes

A 1938 Williamsport home usually started with a fuse box and 60 amps, and that's rarely enough today. We replace the fuse box with a modern breaker panel and size the new service for how the house is used now. A 200-amp panel upgrade is often the first step before anything else gets added.

Knob-and-tube remnants and ungrounded outlets come next. We trace what's still live, retire what should be retired, and ground or GFCI-protect outlets that need it. Two-prong receptacles in older kitchens and baths are a common find here.

Then come the additions the house never had. A Level 2 EV charger needs its own circuit and enough room on the panel. A standby generator with an automatic transfer switch covers the next outage. We're a certified Generac dealer, so we install and service both.

Permits, Inspections and Your Utility in Williamsport

Williamsport issues electrical permits under Pennsylvania's Uniform Construction Code. Like most municipalities in the county, the city relies on a third-party inspection agency rather than running the whole process in house. We pull the permit, schedule the inspection and stay on site until it passes, and that work is already priced into your written quote.

PPL Electric Utilities is the primary electric utility here. A panel swap, service upgrade or meter move needs a disconnect and reconnect at the meter, and we book that with PPL directly. If a storm takes down a line, that repair belongs to PPL. Everything from the meter into your house is on us, any hour of the night.

Electrical service

I was really impressed with Don and Engeli and the work they performed for me. We had a discussion on the best way to run the new line for the septic pump and I really appreciated the extra effort they made to keep the esthetic of my home's exterior. They were pleasant and professional and all my fans and lights work great! They were patient and waited until I approved everything. A great team!

Williamsport Electrical FAQs

Is there a 24/7 emergency electrician in Williamsport?

Yes. We answer around the clock, 365 days a year, holidays included, and our electricians already live in the area instead of commuting in from somewhere else. They arrive in a fully stocked TEE van, ready to fix the problem on that same visit. Call 570-648-8800 whenever it happens.

Can a 1938 Williamsport home handle an EV charger?

Usually, once we look at the panel. Homes from this era often kept their original 60-amp or 100-amp service, and a Level 2 charger needs dedicated capacity. If the panel is full or outdated, we upgrade it first and size the new circuit around the charger, all priced in writing before we start.

Is a power outage PPL's problem or mine?

Check the street first. If the whole block is dark, that's a PPL outage, and PPL handles the repair. If only your house lost power, or just a few rooms, the trouble is more likely at your panel or a circuit inside the house. That side is ours, any hour of the day or night.

What should I check before buying an older Williamsport home?

The panel and the wiring, before anything else. A fuse box or a panel still running on 60 amps is worth flagging, and so is any knob-and-tube wiring still in service. Our electrical safety inspection covers both, with a written quote for whatever it turns up.
