Award-winning company

The Thomas Edison difference
Need a Reading electrician? Reading is the seat of Berks County, and Thomas Edison Electric's crews cover every one of its thirteen ZIP codes, along with Mohnton, Temple and Oley close by. Every electrician on our roster is a direct employee who dispatches from home in a fully stocked TEE van, not a subcontractor working out of a shared yard.
We're a family-owned, multigenerational, award-winning company, licensed in Pennsylvania under PA075449 and fully insured. We've completed over 37,000 jobs since 2021 and answer 24/7, 365 days a year, holidays included. Call 610-777-7600 any time the problem shows up. Every job comes with a written quote before work starts, and if we're running late, the dispatch fee is waived.
Every Reading electrician on our team dispatches from their own home in a fully stocked TEE van, never a subcontractor.
Knob-and-tube remnants, fuse boxes and 60-amp service are routine work for crews who see it every week.
Panel upgrades and meter moves get booked directly with the utility, so the paperwork isn't on you.
You see the number and approve it before a single wire gets touched.
We waive the dispatch fee automatically if we're running late.
Licensed under PA075449, fully insured, with financing available on request.

We're dedicated to building lasting relationships with every client through exceptional service and guaranteed results.
Our team delivers safe, affordable, long-lasting electrical services.
Your time is precious. If we're late, we'll waive your dispatch fee.
Transparent pricing means written quotes with no surprises.
Reading's typical home dates to 1938, which means knob-and-tube remnants, fuse boxes, 60-amp service and ungrounded outlets are still common across the city's older rowhomes and blocks. Some houses have already been updated room by room. Others are still largely on the original wiring, and that's usually where the calls come from.
A fuse box swap to a modern breaker panel is one of the most frequent jobs we do in the city, especially once central air, an electric range or a home office enters the picture. We also retire old knob-and-tube runs still carrying a live circuit and ground or GFCI-protect outlets that were never grounded to begin with.
Met-Ed, also billed as Penelec in parts of Berks County, is the primary electric utility in Reading, with PPL Electric Utilities reaching other pockets of the county. A storm outage on the line is the utility's to fix. Everything from the meter inward, the panel, the wiring, every outlet, is on us, any hour of the day or night.

Start with the panel. A lot of Reading's older housing stock, especially in the rowhome blocks, still runs on a fuse box or an early breaker panel from well before modern kitchens and central air existed. Swapping it for a 200-amp panel is one of the most common calls we get in the city.
Next, the wiring itself. Knob-and-tube remnants tend to survive in ceilings and walls that were never fully opened up during a renovation. We trace what's still live, retire what needs to go, and leave the rest properly documented. Two-prong outlets get grounded or protected with a GFCI device where a true ground isn't practical.
Then there's everything a 1938 house never planned for. A Level 2 EV charger needs its own circuit and real panel capacity, and a standby generator with an automatic transfer switch covers the next outage. As a certified Generac dealer, we install and service both.
The City of Reading issues its own electrical permits, but like every Pennsylvania municipality it operates under the state's Uniform Construction Code, and it typically works with a third-party inspection agency to review plans and inspect the finished work. We pull the permit under our license, schedule the inspection, and walk the inspector through the job when it's done. All of that is folded into the written quote you approve before we start.
Met-Ed, which also bills as Penelec in parts of Berks County, serves Reading, and a service upgrade, meter relocation or panel swap means booking a disconnect and reconnect with them. We handle that scheduling so you lose power for as little time as possible. If a storm takes down the line outside, that repair belongs to the utility. Everything from the meter into the house, the panel, the wiring, every outlet, is ours, any hour of the day or night.
Our Pennsylvania and New Jersey experts are ready to resolve your electrical woes.

Mike Van Uiter and Steve came out to replace our main breaker panel after water came in and damaged it. They made sure everything was done professionally and neatly, labeled and easy to read. Mike also took time to answer other questions we had and make sure we were comfortable with how to do the generator hookup.

Klaus, Mike and Jim were amazing in getting power back to my barn. Our previous underground line failed and Thomas Edison was able to get a new line installed and powered all within 2 days of my call. Mike and Klaus worked late into the night to make sure we got power back on. Thanks for a great job!!!

Reading Electrical FAQs
Yes. We answer 24/7, 365 days a year, holidays included, and our electricians live around Berks County rather than dispatching from a distant yard. They arrive in a fully stocked TEE van, ready to finish the repair on that same visit. Call 610-777-7600 whenever the problem shows up, day or night.
Not automatically, but it limits what the house can support. Fuse boxes were sized for a much lighter load than a modern kitchen and central air draw today. We inspect the box, explain what we find, and give you a written quote for a breaker panel if you need one.
Look outside first. If the whole block is dark, that's a Met-Ed or PPL outage, and the utility handles the repair. If only your house lost power, or certain rooms went dark while others stayed lit, the problem is likely on your side of the meter, and that's ours to fix, any hour.
The panel and the visible wiring, at minimum. Knob-and-tube remnants, fuse boxes, 60-amp service and ungrounded outlets are common enough in the city's older housing stock to be worth a look before you close. Our electrical safety inspection covers it, with a written quote for anything we find.
