A 1984 house came with a 100 to 150-amp panel, and that was plenty for the loads of the day. Then came the heat pump, the hot tub on the deck, the second refrigerator and the car that plugs in. Each one wants a large circuit of its own, so the panel runs out of slots and amps at the same time. The main breaker trips on a cold morning when the heat pump and the dryer start together. That is the call we get.
So the first visit is a load calculation. We add up what the house draws at its peak and compare it with the service. Sometimes a subpanel solves it. Often a 200-amp upgrade is the cleaner answer, with PECO resetting the meter. Both come as written prices, and you pick.
Ida's remnants flooded parts of Montgomery County in September 2021 and cut power widely. That is why a standby generator often joins the list.
Capacity work leads. A Level 2 EV charger needs a dedicated circuit and a panel with room for it. A heat pump needs even more. When a 1984 panel is out of slots, we add a subpanel or upgrade the service to 200 amps, whichever the load calculation supports. Either way, you see the number before we start.
Hot tubs are their own project. The circuit needs a GFCI breaker, a disconnect within sight of the tub and wire sized to the heater. We handle all three and pull the township permit.
