The Thomas Edison difference

Mechanicsburg's Own Electricians

Mechanicsburg electrician calls come in at every hour, and Thomas Edison Electric answers all of them. Our crews dispatch from their own homes across Cumberland County in fully stocked TEE vans. Mechanicsburg sits at something of a crossroads, with Bowmansdale 3.6 miles off, Grantham and New Kingstown each about 4 miles away, and ZIP codes 17050 and 17055 covering the borough.

We are a family-owned company, licensed under PA075449 and fully insured. Every electrician on staff is a direct employee, not a subcontractor. Call any hour, 24/7, 365 days a year, and expect a written quote before any work begins. If we are late, the dispatch fee is waived.

Housing From 1959 and What It Means for Wiring

Mechanicsburg's typical home was built in 1959, right at the edge of the knob-and-tube era. Some houses still carry old cloth-wrapped wiring behind the walls. Others moved on to a fuse box, 60-amp service and outlets with no ground. Both show up regularly on our service calls here.

Because Mechanicsburg sits close to Bowmansdale, Grantham and New Kingstown, our local electricians often cover all four in a single day. That flexibility helps when a job needs a same-day follow-up. Reach us at 717-274-2700.

PPL Electric Utilities is the main provider in Mechanicsburg, with Met-Ed and Adams Electric Cooperative serving other parts of Cumberland County. We coordinate directly with whichever utility applies whenever a job touches the meter.

Common Electrical Projects in Mechanicsburg Homes

A 1959 panel usually means 60 to 100 amps of service, and that number matters more every year. Central air, an electric range and a couple of modern appliances can push an old fuse box past its limit. A 200-amp panel upgrade is the fix we recommend most often in Mechanicsburg.

Old cloth-wrapped knob-and-tube wiring is next on the list. We trace it room by room, retire anything abandoned in the walls, and bring active runs up to current code. Outlets without a ground path get one added, or a GFCI breaker instead.

We also see plenty of amperage issues, where a circuit trips under normal use because it was never sized for what plugs into it today. And when an inspector flags something during a sale, we handle the code violation correction with a written quote before we start.

Permits, Inspections and Your Utility in Mechanicsburg

Mechanicsburg Borough issues electrical permits under Pennsylvania's Uniform Construction Code, and like most of Cumberland County, it uses a third-party agency for plan review and inspections instead of a dedicated building department. We handle the filing, book the inspection and are there when the inspector shows up.

PPL Electric Utilities serves most of Mechanicsburg, while Met-Ed and Adams Electric Cooperative cover other parts of the county. A service upgrade or new panel needs a scheduled disconnect and reconnect from your utility, which we arrange. A downed line or street-wide outage is the utility's to fix. Anything past the meter is ours, at any hour.

Electrical service

I was really impressed with Don and Engeli and the work they performed for me. We had a discussion on the best way to run the new line for the septic pump and I really appreciated the extra effort they made to keep the esthetic of my home's exterior. They were pleasant and professional and all my fans and lights work great! They were patient and waited until I approved everything. A great team!

Mechanicsburg Electrical FAQs

Is knob-and-tube wiring dangerous in a Mechanicsburg home?

Not automatically, but it was never designed for today's loads, and its cloth insulation degrades over time. If it's still active behind your walls, we recommend having it inspected and either retired or replaced in the areas that carry real current. A safety inspection tells you exactly what's live and what isn't.

My Mechanicsburg house has ungrounded outlets. What are my options?

You can add a true ground back to the circuit, which usually means running a new wire to the panel, or install GFCI protection, which is a faster and less invasive fix for most rooms. We will walk you through both and give you a written price for each before you decide.

Can you install a backup generator in Mechanicsburg?

Yes. A standby generator with an automatic transfer switch keeps the essentials running through an outage without you lifting a finger. We size it to your panel and your home's needs, and the utility coordination for the installation is on us.

Does Thomas Edison Electric offer financing in Mechanicsburg?

Yes, financing is available for larger projects like a panel upgrade or a generator installation. Ask when you call, and we can walk through the options alongside your written quote.
