A 1983 builder sized the panel for 1983 loads: usually 100 to 150 amps, enough for the range, the dryer and central air. Then the loads changed. A heat pump, a hot tub and a Level 2 EV charger each want a big breaker of their own. Once two of them show up, the slots run out.
The signs repeat from call to call: no empty spaces on the panel cover, a tandem breaker squeezed in where one belongs, lights that dim when the compressor starts. None of that means the copper wiring is bad. The service needs more capacity, and a 200-amp upgrade solves it in one visit.
Storms count too. Ida's remnants flooded parts of Montgomery County in September 2021 and caused widespread outages. A standby generator with a transfer switch keeps the heat pump running next time.
Load first, then the project. Before we add a heat pump circuit or an EV charger in Spring House, we run a load calculation on the existing panel. A 1983 panel at 100 amps rarely has the headroom. A 150-amp panel sometimes does. The math decides, and you get the answer in writing before anything changes.

Sometimes. A 150-amp panel with open slots may pass the load calculation. A full 100-amp panel usually will not. We run the numbers, then quote one price or two.
Yes. The outdoor unit and the air handler each need a breaker, wire and disconnect of the right size. On a 1983 panel that often takes the last open slot.
Check the street. Dark houses all around mean a PECO outage, and PECO restores the lines. Your house alone dark means the fault likely sits on your side of the meter, which is ours.
Yes. A dead outlet or a wobbling ceiling fan gets the same licensed electrician as a panel job. The van carries parts for common repairs, so most small jobs finish on the first visit.
