As the county seat, Wilkes Barre has more housing variety than its smaller neighbors, from older rowhomes near downtown to newer construction farther out. Older sections of the city still carry 100-amp panels and, now and then, a recalled Federal Pacific or Zinsco breaker box, with aluminum branch wiring in houses from the same stretch of years. A 200-amp panel upgrade is one of our most common calls here.
PPL Electric Utilities powers most of the city, with UGI Electric and the Claverack Rural Electric Cooperative serving other pockets of the county. We coordinate meter work and service upgrades with whichever one bills you. Everything from the meter in, including a home EV charger, is our job.
The city issues electrical permits under Pennsylvania's Uniform Construction Code, typically through a third-party inspection agency rather than a dedicated in-house department. We file the permit, schedule the inspection and meet the inspector, so the process does not fall on you.
