Grounding and Wiring in a 1953 Borough

New Cumberland's typical home dates to 1953. Ungrounded outlets are one of the most common issues we find here, often alongside knob-and-tube remnants and an original fuse box still doing 60-amp duty. None of this is unusual for a borough this age.

Our electricians also work Lemoyne and Camp Hill regularly, given how close they sit to New Cumberland. Call 717-274-2700 to schedule.

PPL Electric Utilities serves most of the borough, with Met-Ed and Adams Electric Cooperative covering other parts of Cumberland County. We confirm the right one before booking a service upgrade.

Common Electrical Projects in New Cumberland Homes

Ungrounded outlets are the most common electrical issue we find in New Cumberland. A 1953 home was built for two-prong plugs, not the three-prong appliances and electronics that fill a house today. We add a true ground where the wiring allows it, or install GFCI protection as a faster, code-compliant alternative.

The panel usually needs a look too. A fuse box or an early 60-amp breaker panel from this era leaves little room for central air or an electric range. A 200-amp panel upgrade clears that bottleneck, and any knob-and-tube wiring still active behind the walls gets traced and brought up to code at the same time.

Permits, Inspections and Your Utility in New Cumberland

New Cumberland Borough issues electrical permits under Pennsylvania's Uniform Construction Code, using a third-party agency for plan review and inspection rather than its own building department. We handle the paperwork and the inspection appointment from start to finish.

PPL Electric Utilities serves most of New Cumberland, with Met-Ed and Adams Electric Cooperative covering other parts of Cumberland County. A panel upgrade or new meter base needs a scheduled disconnect and reconnect, which we arrange directly. A street-wide outage is the utility's to fix. A problem at your own panel is ours.

Electrical service

I was really impressed with Don and Engeli and the work they performed for me. We had a discussion on the best way to run the new line for the septic pump and I really appreciated the extra effort they made to keep the esthetic of my home's exterior. They were pleasant and professional and all my fans and lights work great! They were patient and waited until I approved everything. A great team!

New Cumberland Electrical FAQs

Are ungrounded outlets in my New Cumberland home a problem?

They limit what you can safely plug in, especially surge protectors and sensitive electronics that expect a ground. The fix is a true ground back to the panel, or a faster GFCI breaker that still meets code.

I'm selling my New Cumberland home. Will an inspector flag the wiring?

Often, yes, especially knob-and-tube remnants, an old fuse box or ungrounded outlets, all common in homes built around 1953. A safety inspection before you list gives you a written quote ahead of time.

How fast can you get to New Cumberland for an emergency?

We answer 24/7, 365 days a year, and our electricians dispatch from their own homes across the county. Call 717-274-2700 and we'll get someone moving.

Do you serve Lemoyne and Camp Hill from the same crew?

Yes. New Cumberland, Lemoyne and Camp Hill sit within about two miles of each other, and the same local electricians rotate through all three.
