The Thomas Edison difference

Your York Electricians

A York electrician from Thomas Edison Electric covers the county seat itself, not just the towns around it. York is a city of about 44,938 people, the seat of York County, spread across nine ZIP codes, 17401 through 17408 and 17415. Emigsville sits 3.5 miles out, York New Salem 4.9 and Thomasville 6.4, all inside our regular coverage.

We're family owned, multigenerational and licensed in Pennsylvania under PA075449, fully insured on every job. Our electricians are direct employees, never subcontractors, dispatching from their own homes across the county in fully stocked TEE vans rather than one central lot. We've completed over 37,000 jobs since 2021. Call 717-274-2700 any hour, day or night, and expect a written price before work starts.

Electrical Service Across York

York's typical home dates to 1941, older than most of the county around it. That means knob-and-tube segments still tucked behind plaster walls, fuse boxes instead of breakers in older rowhomes, 60-amp services that were generous decades ago, and outlets with no ground wire at all. In a city this size, we see all four in a given week.

Met-Ed is the electric utility across the city. A service upgrade, meter move or panel swap gets scheduled around Met-Ed's disconnect and reconnect process, and we handle that coordination directly. Power line outages and storm damage outside the house are Met-Ed's to fix. Everything from the meter inward, city rowhome or outlying lot alike, is ours.

Panel upgrades are the most common call across York's older neighborhoods, often paired with an EV charger install once the new panel has the room. A backup generator with an automatic transfer switch is a frequent add for homes that have sat through a long outage, and a full electrical safety inspection is a good starting point for any home this age.

Common Electrical Projects in York Homes

A 1941 build year, city-wide, shapes what a typical York service call looks like.

Knob-and-tube and fuse boxes. Rowhomes and older single homes across York often still carry both. A panel upgrade replaces the fuse box, and any exposed knob-and-tube segments get isolated or removed in the same visit.

A 60-amp service that's short on room. That was standard decades ago. Today it struggles against central air, an electric range and a microwave running together, let alone an EV charger.

Ungrounded outlets. Two-prong outlets throughout an older York home get grounded circuits or GFCI protection, so surge protectors and modern electronics actually work as designed.

A safety inspection is the quickest way to find out which of the three applies to your house.

Permits, Inspections and Your Utility in York

The City of York issues the electrical permit under Pennsylvania's Uniform Construction Code, and like most of the county, it contracts plan review and inspection out to a third-party agency rather than staffing the work in-house. We pull the permit, schedule the inspection and walk the inspector through the finished job.

Met-Ed is the electric utility for York. Any job that changes the service size, whether that's a panel upgrade or a new dedicated circuit, means a disconnect and reconnect at the meter, and we book both ends with Met-Ed. Outages from storm damage or a line down outside are Met-Ed's repair. Everything from the meter into the house is ours, any hour we're called.

Electrical service

I was really impressed with Don and Engeli and the work they performed for me. We had a discussion on the best way to run the new line for the septic pump and I really appreciated the extra effort they made to keep the esthetic of my home's exterior. They were pleasant and professional and all my fans and lights work great! They were patient and waited until I approved everything. A great team!

York Electrical FAQs

Is there a 24-hour electrician in York, PA?

Yes. We answer 24/7, 365 days a year, holidays included, across every ZIP code in York. Electricians dispatch from their own homes in fully stocked TEE vans, so the response comes from nearby rather than one central lot. Call 717-274-2700 whenever the problem starts.

Which ZIP codes do you cover in York?

All of them: 17401 through 17408 and 17415. Whether you're near downtown or out toward Emigsville or Thomasville, the same licensed crew and the same written-quote process apply. The county seat gets the same coverage as any smaller York County town.

My York rowhome still has knob-and-tube wiring. Is that dangerous?

Not automatically, but it needs a look. Knob-and-tube wiring wasn't built for today's electrical loads, and insulation or later repairs sometimes hide damage. We check what's exposed, isolate or replace what's live, and quote the fix in writing before touching anything.

Who do I call, you or the utility, when the power goes out in York?

Check the block first. If the outage covers your street or more, that's Met-Ed's repair, and Met-Ed restores the lines. If only your house lost power, or half your outlets stopped working, that's likely inside the house, and that side is ours. Call us any hour to sort out which one it is.
