A home built in 1938 in Hawley was wired for a different era. Knob-and-tube remnants still turn up behind newer drywall, along with fuse boxes, 60-amp services and outlets with no ground pin at all. None of that meant much when a house ran a radio and a few lamps. A dryer, a microwave and a window AC unit is a different story, and that's usually when an electrical code violation turns up during an inspection or a sale.
The fix is almost always the same starting point: a panel upgrade that replaces the fuse box with breakers and enough amperage for the house as it's actually used today.
