Houses from that era in Scranton, Carbondale, Dunmore, Old Forge, Taylor and Dickson City often had wiring for a fraction of today's load. PPL Electric Utilities is the primary electric utility in Lackawanna County, but it is not the only one. Two boroughs, Blakely and Olyphant, run their own municipal electric systems, and Claverack Rural Electric Cooperative serves part of the county too. If you live in Olyphant, your utility is the borough, and a service upgrade means we coordinate with the borough electric department rather than PPL. We confirm which one you have before we schedule the job, so the disconnect and reconnect happen when they should.
The boundary is always the meter. Poles, lines and the meter belong to the utility. The panel, the wiring and everything you plug in belong to you, and that is the part we service.
We work the whole county: Scranton and Dunmore, Dickson City, Olyphant, Jessup, Peckville, Archbald, Jermyn and Carbondale, Clarks Summit, Dalton and Waverly, and Moosic, Old Forge, Taylor and Moscow. We also cover neighboring Luzerne, Wayne, Wyoming, Susquehanna and Monroe counties.
A 1955 median build year means a lot of old housing in Lackawanna County. The electrical systems in those homes fall into a few recognizable categories, and each has a clear fix.

Lackawanna County permits work the way the rest of Pennsylvania does. The Uniform Construction Code sets the rules, the municipality issues the permit, and most municipalities contract inspections to a third-party agency. Scranton, Dunmore, Clarks Summit and Carbondale can each have their own forms, fees and inspectors. We handle all of it as part of the job. The permit and the inspection are in your written quote, and you never chase paperwork.
Utility coordination has an extra wrinkle here. Most of the county is PPL Electric Utilities territory, but Blakely and Olyphant operate borough electric departments, and Claverack Rural Electric Cooperative serves parts of the county. A service upgrade or a new meter base has to go through whichever one owns your meter. Their requirements are not identical. We confirm that before scheduling and manage the disconnect and reconnect. Not automatically, but a fuse box in a home from the 1950s is usually a 60-amp service. That is not much for a house with central air, a dryer and modern electronics. Oversized fuses are the real hazard. We will inspect it and give you a written price for a breaker panel and, if needed, a service upgrade.
Not always, but it has no ground, and insulation should never cover it. We can isolate and replace active knob-and-tube circuits one at a time or as a whole-house project. Either way, we will show you what is live, what sits abandoned, and what the options cost, in writing.
The borough. Both Olyphant and Blakely run their own municipal electric departments, separate from PPL. That is who handles your meter and your outages, and it is who we coordinate with when we upgrade your service. Elsewhere in Lackawanna County it is typically PPL, or Claverack Rural Electric Cooperative in some areas.
