The Thomas Edison difference

Your Allentown Electricians

Need an Allentown electrician? Thomas Edison Electric answers with electricians who already work this city every week, not a subcontractor sent in for a single job. Allentown is the seat of Lehigh County and by far its largest city, spanning ZIP codes from 18101 and 18102 to 18104 and beyond. Catasauqua is 3.6 miles from downtown, Whitehall 4.1, Emmaus 4.5 and Bethlehem 5.5.

Every electrician we send is our own employee, never a subcontractor, and each drives a fully stocked TEE van out from home. We hold Pennsylvania license PA075449, carry full insurance, and have completed over 37,000 jobs since 2021, with a 4.8-star rating on Google. Quotes are written before work starts, and if we run past the promised window, the dispatch fee comes off. Call 610-782-9000 any hour, 24/7, holidays included.

Electrical Service Across Allentown

The typical Allentown home dates to 1954, which puts knob-and-tube remnants, fuse boxes, 60-amp services and ungrounded outlets high on the list of what we find behind the walls. Rowhomes near downtown and single homes farther out both carry some version of that same original wiring, just distributed differently.

PPL Electric Utilities is the primary utility across the city. A service upgrade or new meter base means coordinating a disconnect and reconnect with PPL, something we schedule as part of every project that touches the meter.

Allentown is large enough that we treat it as several neighborhoods rather than one block. Center City rowhomes, the West End, and the streets toward Emmaus and Whitehall each carry their own mix of old panels and newer additions. Wherever the address falls, the same written quote and 24/7 line apply.

Common Electrical Projects in Allentown Homes

Allentown's median build year of 1954 means a lot of the housing stock, especially the rowhomes near Center City, is still running some version of its original service. Knob-and-tube remnants, fuse boxes, 60-amp panels and ungrounded outlets are common enough that we plan for them by default.

The most frequent Allentown projects:

Rowhome or single, downtown or out toward the edges of the city, the panel is where we start every time.

Permits, Inspections and Your Utility in Allentown

The City of Allentown issues electrical permits under Pennsylvania's Uniform Construction Code. Like most municipalities in Lehigh County, it uses a third-party agency for plan review and inspection rather than staffing that department itself. We file the permit, schedule the inspector and stay with the job until it passes.

PPL Electric Utilities is the electric utility across Allentown. Any project that touches the meter, a panel upgrade, a new service size or a meter relocation, needs a scheduled disconnect and reconnect with PPL, and we coordinate that timing directly. If the outage covers your block or more, that is PPL's repair. Everything from the meter into the house, any hour of the day, is ours.

Electrical service

I was really impressed with Don and Engeli and the work they performed for me. We had a discussion on the best way to run the new line for the septic pump and I really appreciated the extra effort they made to keep the esthetic of my home's exterior. They were pleasant and professional and all my fans and lights work great! They were patient and waited until I approved everything. A great team!

Allentown Electrical FAQs

Is there a 24-hour electrician in Allentown?

Yes. We answer 24/7, 365 days a year, holidays included, and every electrician who responds is our own employee, not a subcontractor. Each one dispatches from home in a fully stocked TEE van, ready to start the repair on that first visit. Call 610-782-9000 whenever the problem shows up.

Do Allentown rowhomes need special electrical work?

Often, yes. Rowhomes near Center City tend to share the same 1950s-era wiring as single homes nearby, but shared walls can make routing new circuits more involved. A safety inspection tells us the layout before we quote anything.

Can an older Allentown panel handle an EV charger?

Sometimes, and we check before assuming either way. A 60 or 100-amp panel from the 1950s often lacks the room a Level 2 charger needs. If it does not, we quote a panel upgrade in writing and coordinate the meter side with PPL.

Is my Allentown outage PPL's problem or yours?

Look outside first. If the whole block has no power, that is a PPL outage, and PPL handles the repair. If just your home lost power, or only part of it did while neighbors still have lights on, the issue is likely on your side of the meter, which is what our 24/7 line covers.
