Working With Catasauqua's Older Housing Stock

Catasauqua's typical home dates to 1938, among the oldest building stock we cover in Lehigh County. Knob-and-tube remnants, fuse boxes, 60-amp services and ungrounded outlets are still common finds once the cover plate comes off.

A safety inspection is usually the right first step on a house this age, since it tells you what needs attention now and what can wait. From there, a panel upgrade or corrected wiring is the most common next call, along with lighting fixes in rooms still running on original circuits.

Common Electrical Projects in Catasauqua Homes

At 1938, Catasauqua has some of the oldest housing stock we serve in Lehigh County. Knob-and-tube remnants, fuse boxes, 60-amp services and outlets with no ground pin are common behind original plaster walls.

  • A full safety inspection to map out what a house this age is actually carrying.

  • Panel replacement, often moving a 60-amp fuse box up to 200-amp breaker service.

  • Lighting fixes in kitchens and hallways still wired to circuits from the 1930s.

  • Grounding two-prong outlets or adding GFCI protection near water.

Most jobs start with the inspection, so the rest of the plan is based on what your panel can actually handle.

Permits, Inspections and Your Utility in Catasauqua

Catasauqua Borough issues electrical permits under Pennsylvania's Uniform Construction Code, and like most boroughs in Lehigh County, it contracts a third-party agency for plan review and inspection. We file the permit, schedule the inspector and see the job through to sign-off.

PPL Electric Utilities serves Catasauqua. A panel upgrade or new meter base needs a scheduled disconnect and reconnect with PPL, and we arrange that as part of the project. A street-wide outage is PPL's to repair. Everything from the meter into the house, any hour, is ours.

Electrical service

I was really impressed with Don and Engeli and the work they performed for me. We had a discussion on the best way to run the new line for the septic pump and I really appreciated the extra effort they made to keep the esthetic of my home's exterior. They were pleasant and professional and all my fans and lights work great! They were patient and waited until I approved everything. A great team!

Catasauqua Electrical FAQs

Is knob-and-tube wiring dangerous in a Catasauqua home?

Not automatically, but it was never built for modern loads and often lacks a ground. A safety inspection tells you exactly where it still runs and whether it needs correcting now or can wait.

Can a 1938 Catasauqua house get a 200-amp panel?

Usually, yes. We check the service entrance and meter base first, then quote the upgrade in writing. Most older Catasauqua homes have the physical space, even with a 60-amp original panel.

Do Catasauqua electricians answer calls at night?

Yes, 24/7, holidays included. Whoever responds is our own employee, not a subcontractor, dispatched from home in a fully stocked van. Call 610-782-9000 whenever the problem starts.

Who pulls the permit for electrical work in Catasauqua?

We do. The borough issues it under the Uniform Construction Code, and a third-party agency, standard across Lehigh County, handles inspection. We file the paperwork and schedule the visit ourselves.
