The Thomas Edison difference

Your Electricians in Schuylkill County

Thomas Edison Electric's Schuylkill County electricians work for a family-owned contractor, and they live and work in this part of the state. Schuylkill County keeps them busier than most places for one simple reason: the housing stock. From Pottsville and Shenandoah to Tamaqua, Mahanoy City, Frackville, Minersville, Schuylkill Haven and Orwigsburg, a lot of houses here predate their current owners.

We hold PA license PA075449, carry full insurance, and Google reviewers rate us 4.8 stars. Whether you need a fuse box replaced, a circuit traced, or a whole rewire, you get a written quote before anyone picks up a tool.

Old house specialists

Schuylkill County homes date to the 1940s on average, and knob-and-tube, fuse panels and 60 amp services are jobs we handle every week.

PPL and borough electric

Whether your line comes from PPL or the municipal systems in Schuylkill Haven and Saint Clair, we coordinate the utility side of any upgrade.

Electrical Service Across Schuylkill County

Pottsville is the county seat, and the county stretches a long way in every direction from there. We cover all of it, including Pine Grove, Tremont, Ashland, Girardville, Tower City, Tamaqua and Coaldale. Our electricians dispatch from their own homes in fully stocked TEE vans, so the far corners get the same crew as the county seat. Schuylkill borders eight counties, and we work in them as well. That list includes Berks, Lehigh, Carbon, Lebanon, Dauphin, Luzerne, Columbia and Northumberland, so a call from just over the line is no problem.

PPL Electric Utilities is the primary provider for the county. Two boroughs, Schuylkill Haven and Saint Clair, run their own municipal electric systems. That distinction matters when you need a service upgrade, because the disconnect, meter work and reconnection go through whichever utility owns the line to your house. We coordinate with PPL and with the borough systems so you are not the one stuck on hold.

Once the power passes through the meter, it becomes our responsibility. Panels, fuse boxes, wiring, outlets, lighting and everything else inside the walls is what we do, day or night.

Common Electrical Projects in Schuylkill County Homes

Half the homes in Schuylkill County were built before 1946, and wiring from that period was never meant to carry a modern load. Here is what we run into most:

  • Knob-and-tube remnants. Often hidden behind newer drywall or spliced to modern cable in the attic. It has no ground and its insulation gets brittle. We trace it, isolate it and replace it.

  • Fuse panels and 60 amp services. Fine for a few lights and a radio. Not fine for central air, a dryer and a microwave. We replace fuse boxes with breaker panels and bring the service up to 100 or 200 amps.

  • Ungrounded outlets. Two-prong receptacles throughout the house. We add grounds or install protected replacements.

  • Aluminum branch wiring from later renovations. A second-generation problem layered on top of the first one.

A safety inspection tells you which of these you have. If you are buying or selling in Pottsville, Shenandoah or Tamaqua, it is worth doing before the closing date.

Permits, Inspections and Your Utility in Schuylkill County

In Pennsylvania, electrical permits fall under the state Uniform Construction Code. Most Schuylkill County boroughs and townships do not keep an inspector on staff. They contract with a third-party inspection agency, which means the forms, fees and inspectors can differ between Orwigsburg, Frackville and Mahanoy City. We take care of the permit through your municipality and meet the inspector when the work is done.

The utility question is a little more interesting here than in most counties. PPL Electric Utilities serves most of Schuylkill County, but Schuylkill Haven and Saint Clair each operate a borough-owned electric utility. If you live in one of those boroughs, your service upgrade is coordinated with the borough, not with PPL. Either way, the utility owns the lines and the meter, and we own everything from the meter into your home. If a storm takes out the neighborhood, call them. If your basement breaker keeps tripping, call us.

Electrical service

I was really impressed with Don and Engeli and the work they performed for me. We had a discussion on the best way to run the new line for the septic pump and I really appreciated the extra effort they made to keep the esthetic of my home's exterior. They were pleasant and professional and all my fans and lights work great! They were patient and waited until I approved everything. A great team!

We've Got Answers.

Schuylkill County Electrical FAQs

My house still has a fuse box. Is that dangerous?

Not automatically, but it is a sign the service is small and old. A fuse box in a Schuylkill County home often means a 60 amp service, and overloading it is the real risk, especially when someone installs a larger fuse to stop the blowing. Replacing it with a breaker panel at 100 or 200 amps is a routine, permitted job.

How do I know if I have knob-and-tube wiring?

Look for ceramic knobs and tubes on exposed wiring in the basement or attic, or single cloth-covered wires running separately rather than in a cable. In houses built before 1946, which is half of Schuylkill County, some usually survives somewhere. We can confirm during an inspection and give you a written price to remove it.

Do you serve the borough electric towns like Schuylkill Haven?

Yes. Schuylkill Haven and Saint Clair run their own municipal electric systems, and we coordinate upgrades and meter work with the borough rather than with PPL. The wiring on your side of the meter follows the same code either way, and the permit still goes through your municipality. Nothing about the job changes for you.

Are your Schuylkill County electricians employees or subcontractors?

Employees. Every electrician we send to Pottsville, Tamaqua or Pine Grove works directly for Thomas Edison Electric. We serve the whole county on the same 24/7 schedule as everywhere else, and we give you an honest arrival window when you call. If we miss it, we waive the dispatch fee. That policy applies in Tremont just as it does in Orwigsburg.
